In other Kentlands news, construction recently began at both Brio’s Chicken and Neal’s Bagels in Gaithersburg. Both restaurants will be  located in the Kentlands paseo, next to Burtons and across from RanKen Noodle House and My Big Finds. Signage for Brio’s Chicken first went up at the location back in 2020 but the restaurant was delayed several years due to issues caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. No opening date for the Peruvian chicken restaurant has been announced. Brio’s Chicken previously had a location in Aspen Hill in the Aspen Manor shopping center, where Outback is located, but that location is under new ownership and is now known as Gio’s Chicken.

Almost four years after we first reported that CVS would be taking over the old Tommy Joe’s/O’Donnell’s location in the Kentlands (311 Kentlands Blvd), the store has set an opening date. The grand opening will take place on Sunday, February 19 at 8am, according to a sign on the door (pictured below).

In 2021 CVS announced that it would be closing approximately 900 stores over the next 3 years due to “changes in population, consumer buying patterns and future health needs.” A CVS location on Veirs Mill Rd. closed last November, Rockville Town Square CVS closed in April, and the Twinbrook CVS closed in August. New CVS locations are still opening, however, with a new store in Clarksburg and one coming soon near the Shady Grove Metro station.

Coming Soon signage is up at TaKorean, a Korean taco grill that is taking over the recently-closed Nalley Fresh location at 261 Kentlands Blvd in Gaithersburg. The restaurant offers Korean style tacos and bowls. This will be opening its first location outside of D.C and is advertising a spring opening.

Poke Bros, which opened its first restaurant in 2016 and has since expanded to over 75 restaurants across the country, will be opening its first MoCo location in Gaithersburg’s Kentlands neighborhood. The restaurant will be taking over the space that was previously home to Next Day Blinds at 107 Market St W until 2020.

More bout Poke Bros: After the founders were introduced to the Hawaiian staple on a trip to California. The appeal of this fast and casual—while healthy—concept immediately inspired the founders to begin thinking how they could bring this unique dish to the midwest. From its inception, we were confident the foodies of Columbus would love the poké concept, but wanted to provide an inexpensive and accessible product in the larger market. After some intense research and trial and error, the Poké Bros founders developed their own brand of poké bowl flavor they are proud to share and call their own. Modeling similar assembly line casual dining concepts, we developed a unique way to build your “sushi in a bowl” and have fun doing so! As the poké movement has caught on, Poké Bros has rapidly expanded into multiple states across the Midwest and East Coast, offering the same fresh and authentic cuisine to a wider range of customers. We will continue to stick to our roots, as Poké Bros continues to grow, and offer only the best fresh ingredients that fill you up but don’t slow you down.

Burtons Grill – Gaithersburg is located at Kentlands Market Square, 109 Commerce Sq. Place. Telephone: 240-798-2021. Other DC-area locations include Riverdale Park, Alexandria, and Sterling.

Brew House Kentlands is coming soon to 325 Main Street in Gaithersburg. Per its logo, it touts itself as being the “best coffee shop in Kentlands.” Brew House Kentlands will be taking over the previous home of Clear Skies Meadery, which has opened its new meadery at 15201 Display Ct in Rockville.

According to signage placed on the window, Brew House Kentlands plans to hold its grand opening on March 4th. Brew House will have its hearing on the application by Kirstie Neal, for a Class D, Beer & Wine License, On/Off Sale on Thursday, February 2nd at 9:30 am, so it appears that it will offer more than just coffee. We’ll have additional information as the opening date approaches.

Construction is scheduled to begin later this week at the upcoming Neal’s Bagels in the Kentlands.  Neal’s Bagels is  relocating from its current location about a mile and a half away at 12141 Darnestown Rd in the Potomac Valley shopping center in Gaithersburg. The Jewish deli has been there for about 30 years, previously operating under the name Bagels Deluxe.  The new shop will be located in the Kentlands paseo, next to Burtons and across from RanKen Noodle House.

The plan for the Kentlands location is to include indoor seating, as well as an outdoor patio where customers can enjoy their breakfast.  Additions will include a grill that will allow the breakfast spot to add fresh-made eggs to breakfast sandwiches, omelets, pancakes, and waffles. The restaurant is hoping for a May 1st opening.

Permanent signage is now up at the upcoming Shake Shake location in Gaithersburg’s Kentlands neighborhood. No opening date has been announced but we’re told the restaurant is expected to open in the first half of 2023. Shake Shack has additional MoCo locations at Montgomery Mall in Bethesda and Cabin John Village in Potomac.

Background: On July 8, 2021, Shake Shack was granted approval for the construction of a 4,700 square foot building with outdoor seating as the second of three commercial infill sites totaling 16,000 square feet along Kentlands Square Place. The burger chain was granted its license to sell beer and wine on the premises during its Alcohol Beverage Services (ABS) hearing on January 6th of 2022, and prepared to break ground in February. Construction began in March, but stalled after flooding that occurred over the summer.

TaKorean will be opening its first location outside of D.C. in Gaithersburg’s Kentlands neighborhood, taking over the recently-closed Nalley Fresh location at 261 Kentlands Blvd. The restaurant offers Korean style tacos and bowls. No opening timeframe is available, as Nalley Fresh still needs to be cleaned out in order for TaKorean construction to begin.

The line-style restaurant was operating five locations at once, a few years back, but now there are just two TaKorean locations open in Washington, D.C. According to RestaurantDive, TaKorean is currently looking to open one restaurant at a time with future franchisees, and wants to ensure success at its initial franchise locations to create a strong base for a burgeoning franchise program. The company is open to multi-unit deals, but isn’t seeking them out. TaKorean is currently casting a wide net for potential markets, and once it sees brand recognition and franchisee interest in a particular market, it expects to build up that area, Lenard said. TaKorean is flexible on potential restaurant sizes, depending on a market’s real estate conditions.
