Several new businesses are set to open this year, including The Fresh Market, Michaels and Snap Fitness.
Umi Hot Pot, Sushi & Seafood Buffet opened last Friday in Rockville and has been drawing huge crowds with waits often exceeding an hour for dinner service. The highly anticipated restaurant has taken the space that was recently home to Miller’s Ale House and previously home to Hooters and Shakey’s at 1471 Rockville Pike in Rockville. The Big Dill, which describes itself as the “#1 Pickle Party in the World”, returns to Power Plant Live! at 34 Market Pl in Baltimore on September 21. In past years the event has included pickle sampling, concerts, carnival games, a pickle eating contest, a brine chugging competition, and an appearance by “Dilly” the pickle. The National Weather Service (NWS) has shared that Smoke from the northern Canadian wildfires are still evident in the mid levels of the atmosphere with this morning’s sunrise. The video below, by Tim Pruss (@mydronepro) shows a bit of a haze above Maryland this morning.
Yelp, a popular crowd-sourced review website, has put together its “Top 100 Sushi Spots 2024” list. Included at #73 was Ocean City’s Sushi Cafe, which can be found at 13711 Coastal Highway between 137th and 138th street at the popular Maryland vacation destination. Olney’s 168 Asian Burrito was the only other Maryland restaurant to make the list at #57 in the country.

The personal-finance website WalletHub today released its report on the Best & Worst Community Colleges, along with its ranking of the States With the Best & Worst Community Colleges. Maryland came in ranked first in states with the best Community College system, with Montgomery College ranked #10 among all community colleges in the country and the highest in Maryland.
Koma Cafe, which offers Italian-inspired cuisine and much more in the Long Branch Neighborhood of Takoma Park, has been a hit since it opened last October. Known for its specialty coffee & tea, and Italian-inspired pastries and food, Eater DC recently wrote that the unique soft serve ice cream the cafe offers “steals the show.”
Governor Wes Moore announced Tuesday that BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport set a new record in June 2024 with 2.6 million passengers, an 11% increase from June 2023. Fiscal Year 2024 also marked a record with over 27 million passengers.
