Silver Spring Historical Society members have measured the historic acorn gazebo in Acorn Urban Park (8075 Newell St) in Silver Spring, MD, determining it surpasses Oak Hill, Ohio’s recently erected acorn statue, which measures 12 feet in diameter and 15 ½ feet in height, and was promoted as the world’s largest acorn display. Built in 1850 by Silver Spring founder Francis Preston Blair, the structure measures 14.058 feet in diameter and 17 feet ¾ inches in height, exceeding Oak Hill’s by over two inches in diameter and more than two feet in height. On Wednesday, Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich, Councilmember Evan Glass, and MCDOT staff joined the Kemp Mill Civic Association for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of a new pedestrian bridge in the Kemp Mill area of Silver Spring. The ADA-accessible bridge was built to provide safer pedestrian access across a creek bed that had become increasingly difficult to cross, and a memorial on the bridge honors the late community member Nicki Toys.

Montgomery County will host a remembrance ceremony and candlelight vigil on Thursday, August 28, in Downtown Rockville to honor lives lost to overdose and raise awareness as part of International Overdose Awareness Day. The event, which includes a resource fair and candle lighting, precedes National Recovery Month in September and highlights the importance of compassion, support, and access to recovery resources.

The Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) is currently investigating a shooting incident that occurred in the 19700 block of Preservation Mews in Montgomery Village. The incident involved gunfire that struck a townhome, but fortunately, no injuries have been reported.

On Thursday. County Executive Marc Elrich issued a statement on the passing of Joseph M. Griffin, Montgomery County’s longtime Register of Wills. Joseph M. Griffin began working in the Montgomery County Register of Wills Office in 1993 and was elected Register of Wills in 1998, serving seven consecutive terms. He held various roles in professional and community organizations, including the Maryland Register of Wills Association and the National College of Probate Judges. (more…)


A recent conversation about Montgomery County’s most famous residents of all-time has sparked a lively debate, prompted by a story about actor Sylvester Stallone’s formative years in the area. Stallone, a global icon with a career spanning over five decades, lived in the county from approximately ages five to fifteen. His time here included attending Woodlin Elementary School and Montgomery Hills Junior High, periods that undoubtedly shaped the future star.
