An Extreme Cold Alert has been issued for Montgomery County, Maryland from Friday, 2/13 at 9pm until Saturday, 2/14 at 9am, due to wind chill values expected to fall below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Officials are urging residents to wear layers, limit time outdoors when possible, and take extra precautions if spending extended time outside. (more…)


A dramatic snowfall map from the European model showing 7 to 19 inches north of DC made the rounds this week, but forecasters say it is far from a lock. NBC4’s Doug Kammerer recently shared a run of the European model snowfall output for Sunday, calling the setup “a tough one.” Earlier runs showed mostly rain, and guidance has continued to shift north and south with each update.

The National Weather Service (NWS) warned Saturday morning that dangerous cold and powerful winds would continue across most of Maryland and Northern Virginia, with life-threatening conditions expected to last through Sunday morning.

Extreme cold warnings have expanded to include the Shenandoah Valley, the eastern West Virginia panhandle, and north-central Maryland as a strong Arctic cold front moves through. Almost all of Maryland and Northern Virginia are now included.
