On the evening of Sunday, March 22, 1992, a customer at Sugarloaf Mountain Market, located at 23800 Old Hundred Road in Comus, found the owner, 57-year-old James Essel, deceased inside the store– having been stabbed multiple times. Twenty-eight years later, in February 2020, the man whose DNA linked him to the murder was killed by Virginia Beach Police.

According to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office, “A Montgomery County Grand Jury has indicted 23-year-old Byron Bautista Turcios, 23, of Beltsville, MD, on charges stemming from a fatal collision that killed 19-year-old Amelia Nicole Hobart of Poolesville. White’s Ferry owners Chuck and Stacy Kuhn have offered to donate the ferry business and assets, valued at $4.5 million, to Loudoun County, VA after Montgomery County recently declined a similar offer, as part of their ongoing effort to reopen the historic Potomac River crossing. On April 11, officials from Maryland, Montgomery County, and the Town of Poolesville offered a $3 million financial incentive to the ferry and Virginia landing site owners to help resolve the long standing dispute and reopen the ferry, which has been closed since 2020. Montgomery Parks will be conducting prescribed fires at River Road Shale Barrens Conservation Park (Poolesville) and Serpentine Barrens Conservation Park (Potomac) during March and into mid-April 2025 to help restore the parks’ native habitats and better support natural ecosystems.
