Update on Miss Toya’s Southern Kitchen in Rio

Miss Toya’s Southern Kitchen at 229 Boardwalk Pl. in Gaithersburg has announced it will open in two weeks. The restaurant posted the following message on its Instagram page on May 16: “We are excited and proud to announce that we are two weeks away from opening. Join our constantly growing team. Please send all resumes to the email address above. We will be accepting in-person interviews starting next week. Be a part of the Miskiri Hospitality Group and join our 7th location!”

The restaurant is part of Jeffeary Miskiri’s Miskiri Hospitality Group, which describes itself as a unique collective of Black, family and woman-owned products and restaurants in the DC area. Miss Toya’s will be located in the 2,741SF space that was previously occupied by BGR and serve southern-influenced dishes such as red beans and rice, macaroni and cheese, and a southern fried chicken sandwich. . Miss Toya’s Southern Kitchen in Rio will be a fast-casual restaurant, while the Miss Toya’s Creole Kitchen at 923 Ellsworth Dr in Downtown Silver Spring is full-service (wait staff, etc.) We will post an update when the opening date is announced. Fruver is Now Open in Wheaton

Fruver, a smoothie, coffee, and snack shop, is now open 11255 Grandview Avenue in Wheaton. It has taken over the space that was previously home to Asesoria Americana and Taxline Services.

Fruver opened in late April and offers a variety of smoothies, smoothie bowls, fresh juices, coffee, and other snacks. The full menu can be seen below.

Dunkin’ is Coming Soon to Chevy Chase

Dunkin’ will soon be joining the Giant gas station/grocery pick-up center at 8500 Connecticut Avenue in Chevy Chase. There are plans to convert part of the existing building to a Dunkin’, but it does not appear that this location will have a drive-thru (rendering available below).

Dunkin’ has been making a big push lately in Montgomery County, with its newest location at the Layhill Center (14328 Layhill Rd) in Silver Spring. Dunkin’ also has upcoming locations coming to the Traville Village Center in Rockville. It will be taking over the former Capital One Bank building at 9761 Traville Gateway Dr. and to the Goshen Crossing Shopping Center in Gaithersburg/Montgomery Village. It will be taking over the former Capital One Bank building at 20000 Goshen Rd.

Kentlands Baby Bar Aiming For June Opening

Back in April, we let you know that Kentlands Baby Bar was coming soon to the Gaithersburg neighborhood. Signage is up and the cafe for babies and toddlers is planning a June opening. It will open at 375 Main St. in Gaithersburg’s Kentlands neighborhood.

Carolynne Nowrouzi, founder/owner of Baby Bar, was raised in MoCo. She wanted to provide a space where parents can go with their young children to enjoy a space where they can each grab a bite and just play. The space will offer “food, fun, and socializing” where “you enjoy a coffee and a bite, while your little ones get yummy food and a baby-friendly place to play!” Baby Bar Kentlands will offer fresh fruits and veggies and will have options for babies (puréed or chopped), food for kids like grilled cheese, egg bites, croissants, and more, and food for adults like bagels, muffins, fruit bowls, and more.

Stella Point Grille Opening Soon in Kensington

Stella Point Grille is coming very soon to 3739 University Blvd in Kensington. Graham Gursky, joined in ownership with Stephen Lee, the principal owner of China Gourmet, have rebranded as Stella Point Grille and will offer what they call “elevated American bar fare.”

Gursky assured us that the food will be competitively priced, “We won’t be selling $20 chicken wings or $10 Miller Lites.” he said. Gursky also praised local Kensington restaurants Knowles Station and Talia’s Cuzina, telling us that there are great restaurants in Kensington but that he hopes to fill the void of something lacking in the area. Stella Point Grille will be a restaurant where you can enjoy a nice meal and is also a sports bar with 17 televisions ranging 55 to 85 inches. They’ll offer event nights like karaoke, trivia, etc. along with signature food specials created by Chef Leonel Merlos throughout most of the week.

DMV Burger Restaurant, Z-Burger, to Open First MoCo Location

Z-Burger has signed on to take over the space that was previously home to BGR at 4827 Fairmont Ave in Bethesda. BGR closed its Bethesda location in 2022 after 14 years. Z-Burger is a local, DMV-based chain that describes itself as “a Washington DC landmark! Home to the area’s most delicious handcrafted burgers with endless toppings, fresh cut fries and 75 varieties of hand spun milk shakes and concretes made with premium Wisconsin custard.”

Z-Burger has multiple locations in DC, a few in Northern Virginia, and three in Maryland– with more to come. Its first location opened in Tenleytown in 2008. This will be its first Montgomery County location. Prior to starting Z-Burger in 2008, founder Peter Tabibian was the general manager at a Jerry’s Subs & Pizza in Maryland. He is also behind Persian restaurant Maman Joon, which has a Tenleytown location in DC and two in Northern Virginia. An opening timeframe for the burger restaurant is not yet available.

The Heights Food Hall To Open This June

The upcoming The Heights Food Hall at Wisconsin Place in Chevy Chase has announced via social media that it will be opening in June. The new food hall will be opening in the space formerly occupied by Anthropologie and PF Chang’s on the 5400 block of Wisconsin Ave. The food hall will offer both indoor and outdoor patio dining and will be open seven days a week from 11am-Midnight.

The Heights will include one full-service restaurant (Urbano), a full-service bar (The Heights Bar), a speakeasy (The Turncoat), and eight local food stalls, including one stall picked from Urbano’s “Stall Wars” competition. We expect the following culinary partners at this anticipated culinary space:

KPOT Korean BBQ and Hot Pot Opens in Germantown on Sunday

Last summer we let you know that KPOT Korean BBQ & Hot Pot will be opening a second MoCo location, in Germantown, following the 2018 opening of its Rockville location (the Rockville location is not associated with the Germantown location). KPot has taken over the space previously occupied by Honey Pig at 19727 Frederick Rd #1337. Honey Pig closed permanently in November of 2021 after five years at the location. KPOT has announced that it will officially open on Sunday, May 14th, via a sign on its door (photo below).

According to KPot, the restaurant was started by four friends from different backgrounds who decided to share their mixed cuisine over the same table. KPot combines traditional Asian hot pot with Korean BBQ flavors. Hot pot, also known as “soup-food” or “steamboat,” is a communal pot of simmering broth that is stuffed with raw ingredients like meat and vegetables to cook in the pot.

Charley Prime Foods Moves Opening Date to Sunday, May 14

Acclaimed DC restaurateurs Jackie Greenbaum & Gordon Banks (Little Coco’s, El Chucho, Bar Charley, Quarry House Tavern) will open Charley Prime Foods, a modern American restaurant, on May 12 at Rio Lakefront in Gaithersburg. Chef/Partner Adam Harvey, long time Executive Chef with Greenbaum & Banks, will helm the kitchen, along with Russell Pike, currently the Chef de Cuisine at Little Coco’s. Located in the former Tara Thai space (9811 Washingtonian Blvd, Gaithersburg, MD), the restaurant will be centrally positioned on the boardwalk. The space will seat roughly 90 inside, with another 100 on an expansive patio, complete with lake views. Editlab@Streetsense designed the space.

The team envisions the restaurant as a mature version of their popular DC restaurant Bar Charley, with an expanded menu, but keeping its lively cocktail forward energy. The broader menu will remain steak focused and will also feature house made pastas (a la Little Coco’s) as well as other items unique to just this location. Starters include Five Spice Pork Shoulder & Crispy Rice with Korean BBQ and peanuts and Rustic Cheesy Bread with homemade rustic bread, garlic and three kinds of cheese. Guests will find mains like Roasted Lamb French Dip with harissa aioli, onions, Swiss cheese, au jus and fries and house made pastas include dishes like Spicy Rigatoni with marinara, Grana Padano, and Calabrian chiles and Squid Ink Tagliatelle with Kauai shrimp, shrimp butter and nduja crumble. An extensive steak menu includes the staples, as well as a Wagyu menu (both American and Japanese A5) and a section devoted to Linz Heritage Angus Prime beef.

Dog Haus Makes List of Best Burgers in the U.S.

The Holy Aioli burger from Dog Haus Biergarten was recently listed as one of the Best Burgers in the U.S. by popular food and drink website Tasting Table. Dog Haus has Montgomery County locations at 7904 Woodmont Ave in Bethesda, 644 Center Point Way in Gaithersburg, and 933 Ellsworth Dr. in Silver Spring.

Dog Haus Biergarten recently began offering 24/7 delivery service out of all three of its MoCo locations, making it one of the only non-fast food restaurants offering 24-7 delivery service in the area. Dog Haus’ virtual brands, including Bad Ass Breakfast Burritos, Plant B (All plant base food) Impossible Shop, Bad Mutha Cluka and Jail Bird (all chicken options), are also available 24-7.

BIBIBOP Offering Free Bowls to All Nurses on Friday, May 12th 2023

BIBIBOP Asian Grill, which has locations in Downtown Silver Spring (935 Ellsworth Drive) and Pike & Rose (11584 Old Georgetown Rd. Unit 1126), is offering free bowls for all nurses on Friday, May 12th (International Nurses Day). BIBIBOP offers fully customizable bowls with your choice of proteins, bases, toppings, and sauces. Options include Korean BBQ, steak, spicy chicken, and tofu.
