National Ice Cream Day is celebrated annually on the third Sunday in July, coinciding with National Ice Cream Month. This year, it falls on Sunday, July 20th. While you can enjoy your favorite frozen treats at national chains like Baskin Robbins, Bruster’s, Coldstone, Haagen Dazs, Jeni’s, Rita’s, and more, Montgomery County boasts an impressive array of independent and local shops offering exceptional frozen delights. The Washington Post asked “What’s the best sandwich in DC?” and split the results into eleven different categories. In the popular Philly cheesesteak category the winner came from Maryland– more specifically, right here in Montgomery County.
Eater DC recently unveiled its list of “The Best Bakeries Around D.C.,” featuring standout destinations for “extra-crusty levain, flaky croissants, brioche doughnuts, baklava, cupcakes, French baguettes, and everything in between.” Among the bakeries recognized, Fresh Baguette and Boulangerie Christophe, which have locations in Maryland, were highlighted. However, only one bakery on the list originated in Maryland.
With exterior construction nearly complete at the Kensington Crossing shopping center, located at 10619 Connecticut Avenue (at Plyers Mill Road), the five businesses that have signed on are set to begin interior construction as they prepare to open in the coming months. Mezeh has received its permit to begin construction in one of the spaces.

D1 Seafood Buffet & Bar (19961 Century Boulevard) in Germantown closed permanently this past spring. The space was previously home to Sushi Legend Cajun Seafood and Bar until December 2023, and before that, The Greene Turtle until 2020. The building was listed as available for sale with a $3.5 million price tag, and now it’s going to auction.
Located at 820 Muddy Branch Rd. in Gaithersburg’s Muddy Branch Square, Royal Tandoor has been turning heads since it opened its doors in May 2021. Josephine Gluten Free Bakery has announced via social media that it will be closing permanently on July 31st. The bakery opened on October 22nd, 2022, taking over the space that was the long time home of Bone Jour.
What started as a burgeoning food truck serving up innovative halal fusion cuisine has blossomed into a full-fledged culinary phenomenon. The Flavor Hive, co-founded by social media sensation Shihan Chowdhury (known as “Chilipeppercooks“) and Amgd Gende, has captured the hearts and palates of diners across the DMV area, leading to the highly anticipated announcement of their first permanent brick-and-mortar restaurants earlier this year. Notably, Chowdhury is a local success story, having graduated from Seneca Valley High School in Germantown.
