The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) has released its upcoming schedule of planned Metro maintenance and shutdowns through 2026 in order to give riders, businesses, and visitors time to plan ahead for the service impacts.
The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) has officially retired its last 2000-series railcar, marking the end of an era for the Metro system. The final train was removed from service at the Greenbelt Rail Yard this past week, closing the book on a fleet that first entered operation in the early 1980s.
WMATA has shared that on Saturday, Oct. 4, and Sunday Oct. 5, free shuttle buses will replace trains between Eastern Market and Minnesota Av/Benning Road on the Blue, Orange, and Silver Lines.

Metro is proposing changes to Rockville’s Twinbrook Station’s transit facilities to enable joint development, create a transit plaza, and increase ridership. The proposed changes include the removal of the 164-space Park & Ride surface lot and the relocation of the bus loop and Kiss and Ride facilities on the west side of the site to accommodate future development.
On Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 1, Metrorail will open at 6 a.m. and close at midnight, operating on regular Sunday schedules at all stations. Metrobus will operate on a Sunday schedule. MetroAccess customers may make a reservation to travel on the holiday; however, subscription trips will be canceled.

DC Metro has the most escalators (and elevators) of any transit system in North America with a total of 674. Metro’s longest escalator is at the Wheaton station right here in Montgomery County. The 230 ft. escalator is the longest single span escalator in the entire western hemisphere (video below).
