Bethesda

Per the United States Department of Justice:  A Maryland man has been arrested on felony and misdemeanor charges, including assaulting law enforcement, related to his actions during the breach of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. His actions and the actions of others disrupted a joint session of the U.S. Congress convened to ascertain and count the electoral votes related to the 2020 presidential election.

Steven Patrick Cook, 24, of Bethesda, Maryland, is charged in a criminal complaint filed in the District of Columbia with two felony offenses of assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers and obstruction of law enforcement during civil disorder. In addition to the felonies, Cook is charged with several misdemeanors, including entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority, disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds, and engaging in physical violence in a restricted building or grounds. Cook was arrested in Virginia on Saturday, Sept. 16, 2023, and made his initial appearance today in the District of Columbia.


MCFRS

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a fire on Wednesday afternoon in the 19000 blk of Montgomery Village Ave, near Centerway Rd. According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer, there was a small insulation fire on the roof of the upcoming Baskin Robbins in the Montgomery Village Shopping Center. The fire is out and there were no injuries reported.

MoCo Government

Per Montgomery County: Committees will review the Spending Affordability Guidelines for the FY25 Capital Budget and the FY25-FY30 Capital Improvements Program and review Montgomery County Public Schools FY23 End of Year Categorical Transfers; receive an update on adult education efforts from Montgomery College and the Montgomery Coalition for Adult English Literacy 

The Education and Culture (EC) Committee will meet on Thursday, Sept. 21 at 1:30 p.m. to review Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) categorical transfers and receive an update from Montgomery College and the Montgomery Coalition for Adult English Literacy (MCAEL) about their adult education efforts.


Crime

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Major Crimes Division are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying a suspect who committed an armed carjacking and strong-arm robbery in Silver Spring.

On August 29, 2023, at approximately 2:14 a.m., 3rd District officers responded to the to the 8060 block of 13th St. for the report of a robbery that just occurred.


Maryland

MDLottery

According to the Maryland Lottery, a $50,000 winning Bonus Match 5 lottery ticket was sold for last night’s drawing at the Citgo located at 8333 Fenton St in Silver Spring. The MoCo gas station will also receive a $500 bonus for selling the top-prize winning ticket.  Also, a $20,000 ticket for last night’s Mega Millions drawing was sold at Ollie’s Beer, Wine and Deli located at 2011 Veirs Mill Rd in Rockville. Both tickets have yet to be claimed.

Burtonsville

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Major Crimes Division have arrested and charged 31-year-old Freddy Obi with an attempted armed carjacking and strong-arm carjacking, both of which occurred on Wednesday, March 22, 2023, in the Burtonsville and Silver Spring areas.

At approximately 6:13 p.m., 3rd District officers responded to the 14900 block of Old Columbia Pike in Burtonsville for the report of an attempted armed carjacking. Unable to take the vehicle, the suspect was observed leaving the scene in a white Ford Fusion with significant damage to the back bumper.


MCPD

The Special Victims Investigations Division is asking for the public’s assistance in locating Walmer Miranda Gomez, a missing 14-year-old. Gomez was last seen on Monday, September 11, 2023, at approximately 7 a.m., in the 12000 block of Veirs Mill Road in Wheaton. He is 5’4″, 130 Ibs., with black hair, brown eyes, pierced ears and was last seen wearing a black t-shirt and black pants.

Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Walmer Miranda Gomez is asked to call Montgomery County Police Non-Emergency (301) 279-8000 (24-hour line).


MCPS

Per MCPS: The National Hispanic College Fair will be held on Friday, Oct. 13 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Bohrer Park Community Center in Gaithersburg. This annual event sponsored by the National Hispanic College Fair and MCPS for all students is FREE. The fair features over 50 colleges, universities and service organizations committed to providing outreach and opportunities to all students.

MCPS students participate by attending with their schools; this event is not open to the public and is held during the school day. Registration is open until Wednesday, Oct. 11 and permission forms for this event can be found by contacting your High School College and Career Information Coordinator.


Restaurants

Taste of Kabab, a new Halal restaurant, has opened at 765-E Rockville Pike in the Ritchie Center (Rockville). The restaurant has taken over the space that was previously home to CM Chicken/Gama Chicken.

Earlier this year, Choong Man (CM) Chicken rebranded to Gama Chicken & BBQ at 765 Rockville Pike #E. At the time a representative from the restaurant, which specialized in Korean style fried chicken, let us that they made the change in early 2023 and that you can still find many of the same or similar menu items. The restaurant closed earlier this summer.
