Per the Maryland Attorney General’s Office: “Maryland Attorney General Anthony G. Brown joined a coalition of 23 Attorneys General in filing an amicus brief with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit in the case Career Colleges and Schools of Texas v. U.S. Department of Education, et al. The brief urges the court to uphold the Department of Education’s Borrower Defense Rule (Rule), which provides relief for student loan borrowers who experience fraud and abuse by educational institutions.
The brief was filed in support of the Department of Education in a lawsuit brought in February 2023 by the Career Colleges and Schools of Texas (CCST), an organization representing forprofit colleges and trade schools, which seeks to challenge the Department’s Borrower Defense Rule. The Rule, amongst other protections, allows borrowers who experienced certain misconduct on the part of their schools to receive debt forgiveness on their federal student loans.
Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) responded to the 12,200 blk of Village Square Ter, near Parklawn Dr, for the report of a fire at the Village Square Apartment complex in North Bethesda on Saturday, October 14. According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer, the was located on the first floor of the 4-story building and has been extinguished. EMS is evaluating two residents for smoke inhalation.

One of the highlights of this year’s festival is a large-scale chocolate sculpture of George Washington on horseback, created by award-winning chocolate artist Paul Joachim.
The sculpture will be part of a special exhibit exploring chocolate’s place in early American history. Guests can see the sculpture up close, sample colonial-style drinking chocolate, and shop the exclusive Collector’s Heritage Box inspired by the historic drink. It’s a unique opportunity to experience chocolate through art, history, and taste all in one place.

Kids under 12 receive free admission with a ticketed adult and can get creative at our complimentary kids’ craft tables. Festival mascots Chunk & Bean will also be on-site for meet-and-greets and photo opportunities throughout the weekend. Families can even shop for Chunk & Bean plushies, children’s books and other kid-friendly items.

Milk & Honey, a southern inspired brunch and soul food restaurant which has locations across DC, Maryland, and Virginia, has opened in the space that was recently home to Willie T’s Seafood Shack at 9326 Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring. The news of its opening was first reported by Source of the Spring.
Both Milk & Honey and Willie T’s concepts are owned by Thompson Hospitality, the group behind Matchbox (Bethesda, Rockville, and Silver Spring locations in MoCo), Austin Grill and American Tap Room (both previously in MoCo), and Wiseguy Pizza (now open at Wheaton Mall.) Menu items at Milk & Honey include “Chef Sammy’s Award Winning” Shrimp & Grits, Deep Fried Salmon Hash, Chicken & Waffles, and Crab Benedict. According to the restaurant’s website, this Milk & Honey location will be a a uick service restaurant with limited seating available. Food will be served in carry-out containers. Restaurant hours:
Montgomery County Police has issued the following traffic advisory on Saturday morning (6:53am): “Utility work has westbound Old Georgetown Road closed from Tuckerman Lane to I-495. Drivers are advised to seek an alternate route. Expect significant delays.”

The Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) is investigating a shooting in the area of New Hampshire Avenue and Milestone Drive in White Oak.
According to a social media post by police at 10:14pm, “no injuries have been reported. One vehicle was struck by a bullet. The scene is secured.” We will provide an update if additional information is made available.
Per Montgomery County: “Montgomery County’s Office of Grants Management is accepting applications from qualified nonprofit organizations providing direct services to or advocacy for County community members. An amount totaling $250,000 is available through the County’s Fiscal Year 2024 (FY24) Quarter 2 Community Projects Fund Grants Program. Applications can be submitted by eligible nonprofits until 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 31.
Nonprofit organizations with fewer than three employees and annual budgets of $250,000 or less are eligible to receive a grant. Nonprofits do not need to be based in Montgomery County to apply, but all projects must occur within the County or be exclusively focused on County residents. FY24 Community Project Fund award amounts will vary with a minimum award of $5,000 and a maximum award amount of $25,000 over a six-month performance period.
Per the State of Maryland: Governor Wes Moore today delivered remarks in support of the state of Israel and the Jewish community at the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Washington’s Stand with Israel rally. The governor made clear that the State of Maryland stands with Israel, and he condemned the actions of the terrorist organization Hamas, which targeted and killed innocent civilians.
Akira Ramen & Izakaya, located at 1800 Rockville Pike h1 at the Galvan in Rockville, has reopened. The restaurant briefly closed several weeks back as they were undergoing a change in management. “At Akira Ramen, we specialize in taking the authentic ramen experience to the next level. Joan– a “private school administrator” from Rockville, exited “The Golden Bachelor” prematurely after she made the decision to go home and be with her family member during a time of need. After winning the episode’s talent show with a touching poem, and a one-on-one date with Gerry (the Golden Bachelor), she became a frontrunner in the competition that involves women 60 years young and up vying for Gerry’s affection. Joan made the decision to return home and be with her daughter, who has been having a difficult time since recently giving birth.
“My journey to find love took a detour this week as I traded the mansion for motherhood and headed home to be with my family. Family comes first, period.
