Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a call for a house fire on Foxlair Rd, off of Huntmaster Rd, in the Gaithersburg/Laytonsville area at approximately 9:45 on Monday night after a passerby reported the house on fire.

According to MCFRA Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer, the situation involved the exterior of the home being on fire due to decorative Christmas lights. Upon arrival, firefighters found the fire “mostly out”, and completed extinguishing what was left. There were no injuries, but there was approximately $25k incurred in damage.

Updated Opening Information for Chopt in Cabin John Village

The new Chopt location in Cabin John Village (Potomac), in the space next to Boulangerie Christophe, will hold its grand opening on March 14 (originally scheduled for March 8.) This will be Montgomery County’s fifth Chopt restaurant, with locations currently open in Gaithersburg, Rockville, and two in Bethesda. Prior to the grand opening, on March 13, Chopt will be partnering with Manna Food Center for “Chopt Gives Day” (a tradition the day before every new opening), where 100% of sales go towards their initiatives in ending food insecurity among children and families in Montgomery County.

Chopt joins a bevy of restaurants and retailers that have recently opened or are coming soon to Cabin John Village. Recently Open: The Pretzel Bakery opened in April. Authentic French bakery, Boulangerie Christophe, opened in May. Stretch Zone opened in July. The Scoop ice cream shop opened in August. Cabin John Village, formerly known as the Cabin John shopping center and mall, is named for the adjacent creek and regional park. It has been a pillar of the Potomac community since 1967 and was acquired by EDENS in 2016. Per EDENS: “EDENS has transformed the traditional shopping center experience into a welcoming communal environment that naturally fosters meaningful social interaction. Complementary retail options include a curated mix of home goods, dining, health and wellness and more outdoor greenspace welcomes the opportunity for community events.”

A Montgomery County Woman Died After a Flight She Was On Experienced Severe Turbulence on Friday

A Montgomery County woman died last Friday after a Bombardier Challenger 300 jet she was on experienced severe turbulence on a flight that took off from New Hampshire and was destined for Leesburg, VA. Per Connecticut State Police, “On Friday, 03/03/2023, at approximately 3:49 PM, Connecticut State Troopers responded to a medical assist call at Bradley International Airport. One adult female patient, identified as Dana Hyde, DOB 08/12/1967, of Cabin John, MD, was transported via ambulance to Saint Francis Medical Center, in Hartford, Connecticut. where she was later pronounced deceased. The Connecticut Office of the Chief Medical Examiner subsequently assumed custody of the decedent.

This investigation has been assumed by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Requests for information relative to this investigation should be referred to the above agencies.”

Get Ready to “Spring Forward” and the Latest on the Bill That Was Supposed to End Daylight Saving Time

Daylight Saving Time always begins on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November. Many often use the expressions, “spring forward” and “fall back” to help explain which way we the clocks are moving. On Sunday, March 12, 2023, at 2:00am, we “spring forward” to 3:00am and lose an hour of sleep along the way. The good news? More daylight later into the day as the weather gets warmer.

Daylight Saving Time (DST) is the practice of moving the clocks forward one hour from Standard Time during the spring and summer months and changing them back again for the fall and winter months– in theory allowing us to make better use of natural daylight. A bill to end Daylight Saving Time, called the Sunshine Protection Act, passed the Senate last year, but stalled in the House and expired at the end of the last session of Congress. While there are many who support the bill, right now an end to Daylight Saving Time isn’t imminent.

Blasting Planned During Daytime Hours for Purple Line Construction in Bethesda

On or about March 20, 2023, crews will resume excavation in the Purple Line’s elevator shaft to connect to Metro’s Red Line in Bethesda. This operation will include blasting the rock within the shaft located at the work zone on Elm Street at Wisconsin Avenue. Blasting is planned during daytime hours, typically once a week with additional work in the area occurring over multiple shifts between excavation and removal of spoils from the site. In advance of each blast, warning siren will be activated. Use of backup alarms will be limited during nighttime hours. Work may occur in two shifts weekdays and weekends, as needed, according to Purple Line MD.

Additional Purple Line construction updated in Bethesda/Chevy Chase: Crews continue work in the Jones Mill Road underpass area through March. Work includes utility relocation, construction of retaining walls, and completing the east side of Jones Mill Road. Work may take place 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and overnight 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. weekdays and weekends, as needed.

Metro Now Welcomes Open Strollers on MetroBus

Metro’s youngest customers and those traveling with them now have one less barrier to an stress-free ride on Metrobus. Metro today announced that effective immediately, open strollers are welcome on Metrobus, replacing a policy that required strollers to be folded before boarding.

“Metro is committed to making transit accessible and convenient for everyone, and that includes those traveling with young children,” Clarke said. “This family-friendly initiative relieves a hardship many parents told us they face when riding Metrobus, and we hope it encourages more families to choose Metro.”

Inaugural Women’s Day Reception to Take Place This Saturday

Per Montgomery County: Montgomery County At-Large Councilmember Laurie-Anne Sayles is hosting an inaugural Women’s History Month event on Saturday, March 11 from 3-5 p.m. at the AFI Silver Theatre in downtown Silver Spring to honor this year’s national theme for Women’s History Month, “Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories.” She will be joined by prominent women in the media: Ovetta Wiggins, Politics Reporter with the Washington Post; Andrea Sarralde, Emmy Award Winning Journalist with Montgomery Community Media; and Jenn White, host of NPR’s 1A Podcast.

“Women’s History Month is an important time to celebrate the achievements of trailblazing women striving for equal rights,” said Councilmember Sayles. “By bringing women together in Montgomery County for this special occasion, we learn about the sacrifices women have made to successfully lead in their careers. Council and County Executive Send Letter to the Maryland House Rules and Executive Nominations Committee Supporting the Melanie Diaz Sprinklers Save Lives Act

Per Montgomery County: The Montgomery County Council and County Executive Marc Elrich, led by Councilmember Kate Stewart, sent a letter to the chair and members of the Maryland House Rules and Executive Nominations Committee today in support of the Melanie Diaz Sprinklers Save Lives Act (House Bill 1292), sponsored by Maryland State Delegates Lorig Charkoudian, Marvin Holmes, David Moon, Emily Shetty and Jared Solomon and Jheanelle Wilkins.

Stronger fire safety protections like these could have helped slow the devastating fire last month at a Silver Spring high-rise apartment complex that displaced over 400 residents, led to the hospitalization of 20 people, including firefighters responding to the incident, and caused the tragic death of 25-year-old Melanie Diaz and her two dogs. In 2019, the Maryland State Fire Marshal highlighted the dangers of living in high-rise buildings without sprinkler systems, which have been shown to reduce civilian fire deaths by up to 87% – but older buildings, a majority of which are in Montgomery County, are not required to have these sprinkler systems in place.

The initiative engaged more than 100 experts in a wide range of areas such as public and mental health, gun violence, polarization, business sector engagement, citizen advocacy, education and technology. The College was represented by Professor of Psychology Andraè L. Brown, Professor of Criminal Justice Sonia Pruitt, and Professor of Political Science and History Karl Smith, and are all named as contributors to the report. Prof. Brown is a speaker at “The120 Initiative Regional Conference on Gun Violence Reduction,” convening today in Washington, DC.
