Over a year ago we let you know that Black Lion Café, which has a location in Rockville, will be opening a new location in the Fenton Silver Spring apartments at 8240 Fenton St in Silver Spring. After a previously planned November 1st opening that was pushed back, a new opening date has been set– Monday, January 2nd.


Crime

Per the U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of Maryland: A federal grand jury has returned an indictment charging Nader Pourhassan, age 59 of Lake Oswego, Oregon, and Kazem Kazempour, age 69, of Potomac Maryland, for their roles in schemes to defraud investors in CytoDyn Inc., a publicly traded biotechnology company based in Vancouver, Washington.  Pourhassan was CytoDyn’s president and CEO at the time of the alleged fraud.  Kazempour is the co-founder, president, and CEP of Amarex Clinical Research LLC (Amarex), a private company with offices in Germantown, Maryland, that managed CytoDyn’s clinical trials.  The indictment was returned on December 15, 2022, and unsealed today upon the arrests of the defendants. 

The indictment was announced by United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Erek L. Barron; Assistant Attorney General Kenneth A. Polite of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division; Special Agent in Charge Thomas J. Sobocinski of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Baltimore Field Office; Assistant Commissioner Catherine A. Hermsen of the FDA’s Office of Criminal Investigations (OCI); Postal Inspector in Charge Damon E. Wood of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service – Washington Division.

Bethesda

In October 2016, following discussions with the state and Montgomery County, Marriott announced plans to stay in Maryland and move from its Fernwood Road headquarters to the new location in downtown Bethesda, a 21-story headquarters home to corporate associates supporting over 8,100 hotels in 139 countries and territories around the world. Governor Hogan took part in the groundbreaking for the site in 2018.

Earlier this year, Governor Larry Hogan and Lt. Governor Boyd K. Rutherford celebrated the opening of Marriott International’s new global headquarters with citation presentations at JW Marriott Seoul during a celebration of the grand opening and at the company’s ribbon cutting ceremony in Bethesda. Marriott’s new headquarters includes 20,000 square feet of collaborative workspace, over 2,800 workspaces, 180 conference rooms, and is within close proximity to the Bethesda Metro Station, Capital Crescent Bike Trail, and multiple bus routes.


Potomac

Auffret is approximately 5-feet, 10-inches tall and weighs 150 lbs. He has brown hair and green eyes. He was last seen carrying a light blue backpack and wearing a black sweatshirt and black pants. He may also be wearing a bright green LLBean winter jacket and driving a beige 1999 Toyota Camry bearing Maryland registration plates 2ELM13.  Police and family are concerned for his welfare.

Education

Per MCPS: Montgomery County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Monifa B. McKnight presented her Recommended Operating Budget for fiscal year 2024 (FY 2024) to members of the MCPS Board of Education, the school community, and stakeholders on Dec. 19th 2022.

“Our investments are focused on helping our students own the future by being college, career, and community ready, aligned with the Maryland Blueprint and approached through an antiracist lens. We’re looking to invest in accelerating instruction, expanding innovative programs that work, and ensuring that inflation does not stand in the way of delivering the high-quality services that are a hallmark of MCPS ” Dr. McKnight said.


Bethesda

Per MCPS: Students at Bethesda Chevy Chase High School (BCC) took the initiative to organize, over the period of two months, lectures, performances, and panel discussions to unwrap the effects of gaslighting in their school and their communities (video available here).

“It’s important for the school system to address gaslighting because their students, whether we like it or not, are facing gaslighting through parental figures, teachers, even their colleagues, and their peers,” BCC student Jeremy said.


Olney

Good Earth Garden Market at 1610 Olney-Sandy Spring Road in Sandy Spring has announced it will be closing on Wednesday, December 21. Good Earth’s Potomac location at 11650 Falls Road will remain open.  In an email sent to customers, owner David Johannes said that all full-time employees at the Sandy Spring location have been offered positions at the Potomac store and that the first 30 people who stop in to say good bye on Wednesday will get a free 4″ poinsettia.

“It is with a sad heart that we announce Good Earth Sandy Spring is closing for good. It is the end of an era that has spanned 43 wonderful years. Good Earth was originally founded in 1979 and has served the Olney/Sandy Spring Market since then. We’ve moved a few times, but through thick and thin our customers, you, have followed and been loyal. We could not have stayed around for 43 years without you. Thank you.


Maryland

Per the Maryland State Police: The Maryland State Police Cyber Task Force is warning consumers to continue to proceed with caution while shopping online to avoid potential scams this holiday season.  According to the Internet Crime Complaint Center’s (IC3) 2021 report, non-payment or non-delivery scams cost people more than $337 million annually. Credit card fraud accounted for another $173 million in losses. Consumers can take simple steps to avoid becoming a victim of an online scam.

Daytime Eats, a breakfast and lunch spot located at 7889 Cessna Ave that opened in the summer of 2018 in Gaithersburg, is available to purchase for $180,000 according to a listing on BizBuySell. The restaurant is described as an “established, creative, deli concept.”

Per the listing, “Offering an opportunity to take over an existing and thriving business in a very busy industrial area of Gaithersburg, MD.
