The deadline is fast approaching to submit an application for the MCPS Healthy Schools Award. The application deadline has been extended and is now Wednesday, Dec. 7. More information on the process and application is available here.
The MCPS Healthy Schools Award is given to schools that are leaders in addressing the essential health needs of students, staff and families. The application process also offers an opportunity for schools to connect and learn about best practices related to school health, to build relationships with colleagues and to identify areas for improvement.
MCPS annually recognizes Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK) with a week of service projects and acts of kindness in schools from Jan. 14-22, 2023. All schools are encouraged to host one of the following experiences:
The district is partnering with WE Schools to host a free one-hour MLK Week of Service planning workshop for staff on Thursday, Dec. 8 and Tuesday, Dec. 13, from 3:30-4:30 p.m. on Zoom. Newly elected members of the Montgomery County Board of Education Grace Rivera-Oven (District 1), Julie Yang (District 3) and re-elected members Brenda Wolff (District 5) and Karla Silvestre (At-Large) were ceremonially sworn in on Thursday, Dec. 1, at Carver Educational Services Center, 850 Hungerford Drive in Rockville.
Ms. Karla Silvestre was elected to her first four-year term on Nov. 6, 2018. Ms. Yang will succeed Dr. Scott Joftus, and Ms. Rivera-Oven will succeed Dr. Judith Docca, who did not seek re-election.
Per Montgomery County: Every family member must be considered during the holidays and Montgomery Parks will enable dog owners to have outing with their pets at its free “Holiday Barket’ from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at Cabin John Region Park in Bethesda. Cabin John Regional Park is located 7400 Tuckerman Lane in Bethesda. The event will be held in the picnic area across from the park’s train station. The Barket will be an opportunity for dog owners and their pets to explore a handful of small local businesses and outdoor activities. Gifts and accessories for pets will be available from vendors. Food also will be available for dog owners.
A Silver Spring woman is $50,000 richer after purchasing a Family Feud scratch-off at Kemp Mill Beer, Wine & Deli at 1339 Lamberton Drive in Silver Spring. Talk about feeling relieved! A 41-year-old Montgomery County player thought she was running out of time to claim a $50,000 prize on the FAMILY FEUD® scratch-off game. Even worse, she couldn’t remember where she hid the lucky instant ticket many months ago.
MOD Pizza, a fast-casual pizza restaurant with over 500 locations nationwide, has temporarily closed its Kentlands location (145 Commerce Square Place in Gaithersburg), with brown paper covering the restaurant’s windows, according to several readers. The reason for the temporary closure is currently unknown, but the MOD Pizza website has the location reopening on Monday.
The acronym “MOD” in the company’s name stands for “Made on Demand” and the company has three locations in Montgomery County– Downtown Silver Spring, Kentlands, and Montrose Crossing in Rockville. MOD Pizza offers individual, customizable pizzas made with organic dough using King Arthur Flour. Customers specify which ingredients they want included on their order, and watch the preparation process, though the restaurant also offers recommended combinations. Pizzas are then cooked in three minutes using stone ovens at 800 °F.
Hangry Joe’s, located next to Roy Rogers at 718-B Rockville Pike, is now open according to Hangry Joe’s social media accounts. This is the third Montgomery County location after opening restaurants in Wheaton and Travilah Square earlier this year. An upcoming restaurant is also coming soon to Montgomery Village.
The Montgomery Mall food court has been without a familiar favorite recently with Popeyes remaining closed over the last few days. According to official Popeyes website, the Montgomery Mall restaurant (7101 Democracy Blvd) is temporarily closed. As of now, there is no word on when it may reopen.
Update: According to MCPD, the adult male victim that was shot early this morning in Silver Spring has been pronounced deceased and the incident is now being investigated as a homicide.
Montgomery County Police are investigating a shooting that occurred early Friday morning in Silver Spring. According to MCPD, “On Friday, December 2, 2022, at approximately 3:05 a.m., 2nd District officers and Montgomery County Fire Rescue personnel responded to the 8500 block of 16th St. for the report of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male victim with an apparent gunshot wound. The victim was transported to an area hospital with life threatening injuries.
The MCPS Department of Transportation and the Montgomery County Department of Transportation’s (MCDOT) Safe Routes to School are looking for adult volunteers to help energize a safe and fun way for children to get physical activity as they walk to and from school with supervision.
The Walking School Bus program allows for students to walk along a set route with one or more adults leading the way, picking children up at designated stops along a predetermined route and walking them to school. Interested adult volunteers can sign up to request more information and to speak with an MCPS and/or MCDOT representative about starting this program in their school community.
Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) were called to the scene of a fire at a Bethesda home on the 6700 block of Whittier Blvd at approximately 5pm on Thursday evening, according to MCFRS Spokesperson Pete Piringer.
Upon arrival, crews encountered a fire in the kitchen and smoke coming from the roof and two occupants outside of the home. The fire was quickly extinguished and there was little extension aside from smoke that filled the home. “No injuries, no dinner, two people displaced” tweeted Piringer. The stovetop fire caused approximately $30K in damages, in addition to displacing the two occupants.
