Gaithersburg

Natalia Coronado-Mercer, a Richmond, Va., resident and sophomore at Appomattox Regional Governor’s School, was awarded first prize in the 2025 Gaithersburg Book Festival poetry contest for high school students for her poem “Chainlink Angels.” Two Montgomery County students also represented the area, winning third place and the “Fan Favorite” award.

The Washington Commanders announced in December that Mark Clouse was named Team President, overseeing all facets of the organization’s business operations. ESPN’s John Keim today shared a fun fact about Clouse who has previously overseen iconic food brands– he is the reason Oreo started selling different flavors.

Governor Wes Moore announced that Bernstein Management Corporation will relocate its headquarters from Washington, D.C. to a newly renovated office in Bethesda, Maryland, bringing 50 full-time jobs to Montgomery County with support from state and local economic development incentives.

Crime

Beverly Ochoa, 30, of Derwood, Maryland, was sentenced today to a 12-month suspended sentence for first-degree theft in the stealing of $2,600 cash from the elderly wife of a hospice patient, announced U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro and Chief Pamela Smith, of the Metropolitan Police Department.
