FOX5’s Homa Bash reported that Magruder High School in Derwood recently faced a significant disruption when a portion of the auditorium ceiling fell during a spring musical production of “Once Upon a Mattress.” Despite the alarming incident the show continued with a brief pause, but it did raise urgent safety concerns regarding the aging infrastructure of the nearly 55-year-old school.

The Maryland Department of Health has announced two grant opportunities through the Center for Firearm Violence Prevention and Intervention to address gun violence by promoting safe storage education and community engagement. The brief argues that Medicaid’s free choice of provider provision protects patients’ ability to access a broad range of medical services, while South Carolina seeks to restrict Medicaid funding for certain providers. Escape the Bookshop games are always based on a real crime with connections to the DC region. They are designed and built by HouseMouse Books to be played in our atmospheric bookshop. This latest game was inspired by a true local museum theft and the goal is simple – to find the stolen object before the suspect flees the country!

Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich will hold six Community Conversations from March through May to discuss long-term priorities and the Fiscal Year 2027 Capital Improvements Program budget. Five meetings will be in-person across the county, with a virtual session on May 6, providing residents an opportunity to share input on major projects, including schools, transportation, parks, and public facilities.

Derwood

The Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center in Derwood is hosting a free “Find Your Lucky Pup” adoption event for all dogs from March 14 to March 17 to help alleviate overcrowding at the shelter. Adoptions are first-come, first-served, and fees are covered by Friends of Montgomery County Animals, with details available on the MCASAC website.
