She was a three-time WHS basketball Team MVP and served as WHS varsity team captain for two years, earning first and second team All-Montgomery County Girls Basketball honors. Jones was the first player in Wheaton’s history to reach 1,000 career points. At Wheaton, she also played soccer and volleyball and was an honor roll student all four years.

Patrick Serrano has been a Lifetime Movie fan as long as he can remember. He grew up watching Farrah Fawcett star in a movie where she overcame an abusive husband, Tracy Gold in a role overcoming an eating disorder, and Tori Spelling as a popular cheerleader, but never did he think he would star in a Lifetime movie.

The 2001 graduate of Blake High School in Silver Spring describes himself as a TV movie expert, actor, writer, and is the host of Lifetime Uncorked- a podcast based on discussing Lifetime movies. Tonight will be his Lifetime movie debut, as he plays the role of Jordi in Lifetime’s Old Flames Never Die.

When successful novelist Kira Young (Yan-Kay Crystal Lowe) returns to her hometown to escape bad press after her cheating fiancé Tyson (Rich Paul) is accused of murder, she rekindles a romantic one-night stand with her high school sweetheart Weston Wade (Lou Ferrigno Jr.), who soon develops an unhealthy obsession with her.

Earlier today, Patrick posted the following displaying his excitement for his Lifetime movie debut:

“TONIGHT is the night. I am in my first Lifetime thriller! 🍷 🔪 ⭐️
If you would have told me when I started Lifetime Uncorked that I would be IN a Lifetime Movie one day, I wouldn’t have believed you. Sure, I went to school for theatre and have been acting on stage ever since. BUT A LIFETIME MOVIE?!?!?
I’ve watched Lifetime movies ever since I can remember. Farrah Fawcett overcoming an abusive husband, Tracy Gold struggling with an eating disorder, or Tori Spelling being a popular cheerleader despite looking like me in drag. The path to Lifetime seemed clear: Be a beautiful sitcom/TV star whose fame was fading. I skipped all that. So being given this opportunity is such a dream come true.
When one of my favorite Lifetime directors, Jake Helgren, randomly sent me a message on Instagram asking me to play a small role in his next Lifetime thriller, I jumped at the opportunity. (I had actually been wanting to have him on the podcast, but was too shy to reach out.) It was really that easy! He sent me the script and a contract and we were good to go! I was his Cinderella and he was my fairy godmother, except we are both attractive gay men.
It wasn’t long before I was on set in LA at a mansion with an infinity pool. I got my hair and makeup done (I looked amazing like I belonged in a Lifetime movie!), had lunch on set, (a Diet Coke and almonds, I was too nervous to eat.), and rattled off my 5 lines when it was my time on camera. Everyone was lovely and extremely down-to-earth. The filming schedule was aggressive but we were all there to get the job done. It felt great!
The cast and crew work so hard on these films. Most of them film in under 15 shooting days total. I saw them fighting daylight and quick changing for the next scene on the schedule. I have an enormous amount of respect for everyone who worked on this film and I want to thank Jake Helgren & Autumn Federici for having me, and for their continued support.
When it was called a “Wrap on Jordi” everyone applauded and it was super surreal. I took a photo with Jake and Valerie (my cast buddy for the day). Jake gave me a bottle of champagne for a job well done and congratulated me with a hug. The spell was broken at the stroke of midnight. I just hope I left a glass slipper for next time.”

Cincinnati Bengals

Zach Kerr was signed by the Bengals off the Arizona Cardinals’ practice squad prior to last week’s win against the Titans. He’s a 2008 graduate of Quince Orchard High School.
Kerr (6-2, 334), an eighth-year player out of the University of Delaware, originally was a college free agent signee of the Indianapolis Colts in 2014. He has spent time with the Colts, Broncos, Panthers, 49ers and Cardinals, and has played in 95 career games (16 starts) with 166 tackles, 9.5 sacks, seven PDs, two FFs and one FR.
Keandre Jones has spent the last two seasons with the Bengals. He attended Diamond Elementary School in Gaithersburg and then Montgomery Village Middle School before going to Good Counsel in Olney for high school.
After playing college football for the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Maryland Terrapins, he signed with the Chicago Bears as an undrafted free agent in 2020. Jones signed with the Cincinnati Bengals’ practice squad on September 8, 2020. He was elevated to the active roster on December 26 and January 2, 2021, for the team’s weeks 16 and 17 games.  Jones was on the Bengals practice squad until being promoted to the active roster on December 21.
Bonus MoCo Connection: Brandon Allen was born and raised in Fayetteville, Arkansas. He was drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the sixth round with the 201st overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft out of  the University of Arkansas, and even had a stint with the Los Angeles Rams from 2017-2019. This season, he has started one game and appeared in six games at quarterback for the Bengals, throwing 2 touchdowns and 0 interceptions. He will back up Joe Burrow in the Super Bowl.
So where’s the MoCo connection? His father, Bobby Allen, was a standout quarterback at Seneca Valley High School in Germantown, and earned the Washington, D.C., area Player of the Year award as a senior. He also excelled in baseball and basketball. Allen went on to earn three varsity letters while playing three positions — kicker, quarterback and outside linebacker — at Virginia Tech. He’s currently in his 20th year on the staff at the University of Arkansas.
Los Angeles Rams
Blake Countess is a strong safety and special teams ace for the Rams. He graduated from Good Counsel in Olney.
Countess played at Michigan from 2011-2014 and Auburn as a graduate transfer in 2015. He was drafted in the 6th round of the 2016 NFL draft by the Philadelphia Eagles. He has also had stints with the Jets and Ravens. Countess was called up from the practice squad prior to last week’s playoff game against the Buccaneers.
Jake Funk holds the Maryland state record for career touchdowns from when he was a student at Damascus High School.
He went on to play at the University of Maryland before getting drafted by the Rams with the 5th pick of the 7th round earlier this year. Funk has primarily played special teams for the Rams  this season and suffered what was believed to be a season ending hamstring injury in October. He returned to the team’s active roster in December.
Maryland Ties
Isaiah Prince (Bengals): Prince has started 4 games on the offensive line for the Bengals this season. He was drafted in the 6th round of the 2019 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins. He’s from Greenbelt and attended Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Prince George’s County.
Rob Havenstein (Rams): Havenstein has been the Rams starting right tackle since he was drafted in the 2nd round of the 2015 NFL Draft. He is from Mount Airy and attended Linganore High School in Frederick County.

Starting today and running through Saturday, Carmen’s Italian Ice at 1115 Nelson St in Rockville is doing their annual “Pay the Price of the Weather” promotion. Whatever the temperature is outside, that’s the price of a small Italian ice (you can substitute gelati for an extra dollar.)

While obviously not a huge money maker for the store, Carmen’s owner Jason Mandler tells us the promotion is a nice treat for their diehards fans and something fun to do during the off-season, when people don’t typically have frozen treats on their mind.

Below is the weather forecast for the next few days courtesy of weather.com:

Carmen’s Olney location at 3233 Spartan Rd will be running the same promotion beginning Friday, as that location is closed on Thursdays during the winter.

About Carmen’s Italian Ice:
It started with a simple idea. Introduce homemade gourmet Italian Ice to the Washington DC area. Jason Mandler – a native of Parsippany, New Jersey – opened Carmen’s Italian Ice & Cafe in Rockville, MD in 2001. Tracing its roots back to Philly and South Jersey where this dessert has been a mainstay for years, Carmen’s offers homemade, gourmet Italian Ice in over 60 flavors. It also now offers frozen custard, shakes, and a toppings bar.

Carmen’s quickly became a welcome part of the neighborhood with Jason and his staff coming up with tasty offerings, personal service and fun special events. Come on in for a morning cup of coffee or an evening Italian ice and you’ll probably run into a few of our regulars. Come a few more times and you’ll be one of them yourself.

Dan Binstock is a lifelong MoCo resident. The Potomac dad is now also a viral TikTok sensation, earning over 340K followers and nearly 30 million views in less than a month with his ability to hear a song just once and recreate it to near perfection on the piano.

Binstock was born and raised in Potomac. He started playing piano at the age of 5, when he realized he had an ear for music. After taking lessons growing up and continuing to play while he was a student at Wootton High School, where he was known for his piano-playing ability, he went in a different direction with his career, earning his law degree and currently owning and operating a company that recruits lawyers.

When the pandemic hit and everyone was stuck inside… “it just sort of happened” Binstock told us. One day he decided to do a Facebook live, taking requests from people, and playing as many songs as he could. “If I’ve heard it, I would play it. If I haven’t, I can listen to it on the spot just once, and then play it.”

In the days following the initial Facebook Live performance, he was inundated with requests for parties, fundraisers, business holiday parties, and more, all via Zoom. That led to Binstock starting his evening passion project, Virtual Piano Party, where he has been hosting piano parties on Zoom since December of 2020 until now, having successfully provided entertainment for over 150 events all over the world.

One of his friends kept telling him he should get on TikTok, a video-focused social networking service that hosts a variety of short-form user videos, from genres like music, pranks, stunts, tricks, jokes, dance, and entertainment. After initially thinking it was for teenagers, he quickly realized how many people were interested in his videos. One of his videos that includes his daughter attempting to stump him by letting him hear part of Lil Nas X’s “Industry Baby” has been viewed over 20 million times in just over a week.

Dan was amazed at how quickly his following grew. His daughters were initially a little embarrassed and didn’t want him on TikTok. Now he gets texts from school with updates on the latest numbers on social media. “A really fun, new way of bonding” Binstock said.

His New Year’s resolution is to focus on posting music videos rather than watching the news and Netflix. So far, it has worked. His TikTok, @PianoDadDan, now has over 343,000 followers and 3.5 million likes. His most viral video has been viewed for over 162,000 hours. He told us he started doing this because he has always loved to make people happy through music. Growing up, one of his favorite things to do was to take requests and put smiles on faces, something he told us he plans to continue doing through his social media accounts.

Some may have noticed a familiar face on television when Luka Van Herksen appeared on Law and Order: SVU last night. Luka was born in Mozambique and lived across the world before moving to Montgomery County- first to Bethesda and later Clarksburg.

Last night he had a role in TV’s longest running primetime drama, Law & Order: SVU, where he played a young teen who was questioned for his involvement in a spree of hate crimes that occurred in the city. The episode was introducing one the NYPD’s new unit, Hate Crimes, which is also the newest spinoff of the Law & Order series. Luka said he enjoyed his time on set and thought highly of his co-star, Ice-T, who would talk to Luka during breaks and give him tips.

Below you’ll see a couple screen captures of Luka’s appearance on the show, courtesy of MCPS teacher Grace Lovelace Guishard.

We spoke with Luka’s mom, Melissa Vigues Van Herksen, who is an MCPS substitute and told us more about Luka’s MoCo history. The Van Herksens bought a house in Clarksburg after they resigned as diplomats, and Luka spent 5th grade in the area and all of middle school at Rocky Hill Middle School. Luka credits his middle school choir teacher at Rocky Hill, Mr. Paul Heinemann, for being extremely  supportive and helping him grow.

While in Montgomery County, Luka got involved with Young Artists of America, a group that operates out of Strathmore in North Bethesda. Luka says he got his passion and inspiration from YAA, which trains young performing artists in collaboration with leading, professional artists to present fully-orchestrated productions at state-of-the-art venues including their home stage at the Music Center at Strathmore.

Last year, Luka was the only child Toby’s Dinner Theater’s production of Elf the Musical in neighboring Howard County. Luka and his family recently moved to Frederick County, where he is enrolled at Linganore High School.

Luka has gone to New York a few times to film PSAs and commercials for grocery store chain, ShopRite. He is hoping for more episodic work like his role in SVU in the future. We wish him the best of luck!

Montgomery County couple wins big on Ca$h Bonus scratch-off

Per MD Lottery:

A Gaithersburg man and his wife are thankful that they celebrated early this year, as ripping into a gift pre-holiday delivered a whopping surprise. A $10 Ca$h Bonus scratch-off the man purchased while travelling through Montgomery County for work won a $50,000 prize.

After completing a job nearby, the lucky man said he stopped at Quince Orchard Shell at 501 Quince Orchard Road in Gaithersburg to pick up a few scratch-offs for his wife before heading home.

“She loves scratch-offs, so I stopped to pick up a few for a pre-holiday surprise,” said the winner.

The couple scratched them together later that evening. When his wife got to the last ticket of the bunch, she quickly got a big surprise.

“She scratched off a $10,000 prize and showed it to me, then several more appeared one by one,” he said.

When the tally from their ticket hit $50,000, the duo needed additional verification before they could believe their luck. After scanning the ticket at a nearby retailer’s ticket checker, it became clear they would soon be headed to Lottery headquarters.

“I still don’t believe it. This is very exciting,” said the man.

The lucky winner says that he and his wife will use the winnings to zero out a few monthly expenses. They also plan to use a portion of the prize to help their parents.

The Ca$h Bonus ticket joined the Maryland Lottery’s lineup of scratch-off games in August. The game has five remaining unclaimed $100,000 top prizes, along with five more $50,0900 prizes and thousands of additional prizes ranging from $10 to $10,000.

Steve Chu, QO alum and owner of Baltimore restaurant Ekiben, Drove 6 Hours to Cook for Customer with Cancer

Steve Chu, QO alum and owner of Baltimore restaurant Ekiben, packed up and headed to Vermont when he learned that one of his customers, who was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, was craving one of their dishes.

A family member had reached out to the Ekiben team to tell them that her mother-in-law, who lives in Vermont but often visits Maryland, had stage 4 lung cancer and was craving Ekiben’s tempura broccoli. The family member shared that she was planning to drive up from Maryland to Vermont and wanted to surprise her Ekiben-loving relative with the dish.

After asking whether she could either have the recipe or ingredients for the broccoli dish so it would be fresh after the long drive, she got a surprising response from Ekiben’s team. Chu replied by saying “Thanks for reaching out. Ephrem [a co-owner] and I are more than willing to meet you guys in Vermont, and make the food fresh so it will be just like what she remembered.”

As reported by Good News Movement , Steve and his team stayed in the area for a couple of days and turned down the family’s offer to compensate them for their air bnb, food, and gas. Chu was joined by co-owner Ephrem Abebe alongside one other team member.

Odessa Shannon Middle School Chooses New Colors and Mascot

Back in November, the Montgomery County Board of Education voted to change the name of Col. E. Brooke Lee Middle School in Silver Spring to Odessa Shannon Middle School.

The change will take place following this school year and yesterday the school staff unveiled the brand new mascot and school colors in a YouTube video.

Odessa Shannon Middle School has adopted “Wolves” as the new mascot and has chosen blue (the top color from a survey) and light green (Odessa Shannon’s favorite color) as the nee school colors.

Shannon was the first African-American Board of Education member and a lifelong activist. She worked tirelessly to help close the achievement gap for minority families and was the recipient of numerous awards, such as the Human Rights Hall of Fame, the African American Living Legend Award, and Hornbook Award for Outstanding Service to Education.

Shannon’s name will replace Col. E Brooke Lee, a Maryland politician whose policies shaped Montgomery County’s zoning and land use in the 1920s. These laws barred African-Americans from living in Silver Spring, with the exception as domestic servants. It wasn’t until 1968 that Montgomery County enacted fair housing policies.
