Suspect Arrested and Charged with Handgun Violations following Traffic Stop in Germantown

Gaithersburg, MD – Officers from the Montgomery County Department of Police – 5th District Community Action Team (DCAT) have arrested and charged 21-year-old Michael Smith Jr. of Bryans Road for possessing a controlled dangerous substance and a firearm.

 

On Tuesday, March 15, 2022, at approximately 7:20 p.m., officers were patrolling in the area of Germantown Park when they observed a black 2010 BMW 328 committing a traffic violation. Officers also observed that the vehicle had an equipment safety violation.  A traffic stop was conducted on the vehicle. Officers approached the vehicle and smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from inside. The front seat passenger of the BMW, later identified as Michael Smith Jr. of Bryans Road, exited the vehicle and attempted to flee the scene on foot. Officers quickly apprehended him and located multiple bags of marijuana, a loaded .40 caliber Smith and Wesson handgun and a weapon mounted light in his possession. A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed additional marijuana and controlled dangerous substance paraphernalia.

 

Smith Jr. was arrested and transported to the Central Processing Unit, where he has been charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance and multiple firearm related charges.

 

This is an active and ongoing investigation.
