For Immediate Release: Tuesday, June 7, 2022
The Gwendolyn E. Coffield Community Recreation Center, located at 2450 Lyttonsville Road in Silver Spring, will reopen to the public on Monday, June 13 with a special celebration on Saturday, June 18. During the COVID-19 emergency the Gwendolyn E. Coffield Community Recreation Center and Long Branch Community Recreation Center and Senior Center served as shelters for community members who needed safe lodging and basic services. The opening of the new Nebel Street Shelter in March made it possible to begin reopening plans. The Long Branch Community Recreation and Senior Center reopened to the public on May 16.

The Gwendolyn Coffield Community Recreation Center is in the heart of the Rosemary Hills community within the 17.1-acre Rosemary Hills-Lyttonsville Local Park. The recreation center offers a variety of recreation programs and activities for all ages. The Parks grounds, managed by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, includes a softball field, a football/soccer field, two multi-use fields, four tennis courts, a playground, and a picnic area.

“The reopening makes it possible for the center to once again be a place for young people, families, and older adults to spend their leisure time,” said Montgomery County Recreation Director Robin Riley. “We have been working behind the scenes to have a facility that where we can offer high-quality recreation programming for everyone.”

There will be free and affordable programing offered for adults, youth, and families. That will include sports clinics, cooking classes, fitness, floor hockey, martial arts, and futsal.

A Welcome Back Movie Night Festival, featuring Disney’s Encanto, will be held on Saturday, June 18, from 7 – 10 p.m. The celebration will begin with fun activities for the entire family including music, food, a live Encanto character, Father’s Day drum circle, Juneteenth Freedom Day Table, and a TikTok Dance Booth!
