The Earle B. Wood Middle School community is mourning the loss of Mr. Bill Allen, who passed away suddenly on Friday night. Mr. Allen was a physical education teacher at Wood Middle School for 52 years before retiring last June.
Below is a letter to the Wood Middle School community from principal Heidi Slatcoff. Our condolences to his family, friends, coworkers and students.
The guilty plea was announced by United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Erek L. Barron and Special Agent in Charge George Adams, Office of Investigations, Office of Inspector General of the Department of Health and Human Services.
According to Connally’s plea agreement, from December 28, 2020 to July 25, 2021, Connally used an anonymous email account from a provider of secure, encrypted email services based in Switzerland, to send a series of emails to Dr. Anthony Fauci, the current Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (“NIAID”) and the Chief Medical Advisor to President of the United States, threatening to harm and/or kill Dr. Fauci and members of his family. One of the emails threatened that Dr. Fauci and his family would be “dragged into the street, beaten to death, and set on fire.” On April 24, 2021 alone, Connally sent seven threatening emails starting at 10:05 p.m.
Under legislation passed by the General Assembly in 2013, the Comptroller announces gas tax increases on or before June 1 of each year that are set to take effect on July 1. The tax increase is calculated by the Comptroller’s Office.
“This tax increase, while hardship-inducing for Marylanders at any time, is simply unconscionable at this moment when gas prices are already at their highest level in recorded history amid a period of prolonged inflation and economic uncertainty,” writes Governor Hogan in a letter to the comptroller. “I know that you agree we should do more to give Marylanders a break from these punishing prices. That is why it is my hope that you will use every legal and regulatory power at your disposal to halt or minimize the impact of the accelerating gas taxes, and that you consider granting an extension for paying the taxes and removing penalties for unpaid tax, including the revocation of business licenses.”

The officer located the motorcycle and the operator, later identified as Reginald Alden Banks Jr., in the garage. Upon seeing the officer, Banks fled the scene on foot. The officer observed that Banks was wearing an orange and gray backpack. After a brief foot pursuit, officers observed Banks emerge from a corner, no longer wearing the backpack. Banks was subsequently apprehended.
On Friday, May 20, employees of the Starbucks at 16806 Georgia Ave in Olney voted 9-4 in favor of unionizing, according to a tweet by Starbucks Workers United. In April, employees of the store sent a letter to Starbucks President Howard Schultz announcing their intention to unionize, saying they had attempted on numerous occasions to communicate with management regarding their grievances but believe their concerns fell on deaf ears. The letter went on to say that the employees had, “grown increasingly exhausted and stressed, not to mention faced with constant, inconsistently enforced changes.”
Olney is the third Maryland Starbucks location to unionize, joining stores in Baltimore and Linthicum Heights. On Friday Council Vice-President Evan Glass tweeted support for the Olney Starbuck’s, saying he was “really proud that the Starbucks on Georgia Ave in Olney is officially the first Starbucks in Montgomery County and 3rd in Maryland to unionize. Stopped by today to support the workers as they voted. Congrats and thank you.”
On Monday, May 23, 2022, at approximately 8 a.m., Breanna Hooper was last seen in the 12400 block of Braxfield Ct. Hooper is 6-feet tall and weighs approximately 130 pounds. She has brown eyes and brown hair. She was last seen wearing a black t-shirt, black leggings and white shoes. Police and family are concerned for her welfare.

On Tuesday, May 10, 2022, The V&I Unit were conducting surveillance at the Rockville Hotel, located at 3 Research Court, when detectives observed a black Chevrolet Tahoe that appeared to be an unmarked police vehicle. To ensure that they were not hindering another police investigation, detectives contacted the hotel to determine who the vehicle belonged to.
During their investigation, detectives determined that the vehicle was registered to Taber who identified himself as an “agent” when he checked into the hotel. He displayed what hotel staff believed to be law enforcement identification and stated that his “government issued vehicle” needed to be parked in front of the hotel. Through further investigation, it was determined that Taber was not an “agent” and falsely identified himself as such.
Montgomery County Councilmember Nancy Navarro has endorsed David Blair for County Executive. We need David’s bold and enterprising leadership in the office of the County Executive.”

Last month, coming soon signage went up at the upcoming Taco Bamba location in Gaithersburg. The new restaurant will be located in the space that was formerly home to Urban Crawfish at 670 Quince Orchard Road, next to the upcoming Miyaji Kebab and Rumali Rolls (which is next to Beers & Cheers Too).
Taco Bamba has a hearing with Montgomery County’s Alcohol Beverage Services on June 2nd, for a “Class B, Beer, Wine and Liquor License, On Sale Only.” The restaurant is planning on a June or July opening for its Gaithersburg location.
168 Asian Burrito at 18000 Georgia Ave in Olney has announced on social media that it will be reopening on June 10. The restaurant, which is located inside of the Olney Exxon gas station, had previously announced that it would be closed from 4/18-5/26 due to “family reasons.” 168 Asian Burrito serves sushi burritos, poke bowls, and Chinese buns.
