From the Office of Council President Albornoz: Today the Montgomery County Council unanimously voted to approved Bill 21-22, Weapons – Firearms In or Near Places of Public Assembly, sponsored by Council President Gabe Albornoz. This bill is cosponsored by the full Council.

The new law prohibits the possession of firearms in or near places of public assembly, with certain exemptions, and removes an exemption that allows individuals with certain handgun permits to possess handguns within 100 yards of a place of public assembly.

Frederick County Sheriff’s Office Finds Decomposed Body Behind Grocery Store

Per the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office on 11/14: At approximately 12:20 p.m., today, Frederick County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the 800 block of East Main Street, Middletown, Maryland, for the report of a dead body.

Deputies responded and found a decomposed body in the field behind the Safeway grocery store. Additionally, deputies found a 9mm handgun and a backpack. FCSO detectives are working to identify the body and have several leads.

MCPD Investigating Strong-Arm Robbery of Dollar Tree; Surveillance Video Released

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Major Crimes Division are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying a suspect who robbed a Dollar Tree on Wednesday, November 9, 2022. Detectives have released surveillance video of the suspect. At approximately 8:31 p.m., 5th District officers responded to the 18000 Mateny Rd. for the report of a strong-arm robbery that just occurred.

The investigation by detectives determined that 18000the suspect entered the store, retrieved merchandise to purchase and went to the counter. While the victim was helping another customer, the suspect pushed the victim out of the way. The two struggled and the suspect stole an undisclosed amount of money from the cash register.

MoCo Restaurant Listed as Best Thai Restaurant in Maryland by ‘Eat This, Not That’

Eat This, Not That has created “a round-up of positively reviewed Thai-focused restaurants in every state that you’ll want to visit at least once.” Montgomery County restaurant Charm Thai (8408 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring) earned the nod for the state of Maryland.

Per the list, “One Yelp reviewer calls Charm Thai the best Thai in Silver Spring. Now if that doesn’t speak volumes, the menu is loaded with authentic Thai cuisine from the crispy rice salad and crispy duck rolls to noodle lover soup and crab meat fried rice. Finish off the meal with a Thai-style fried banana for dessert. Open seven days a week.”

Cold Rain for Most; Snow/Ice Possible West of I-81

Per the National Weather Service: “It’s a cold rain for most today w/ snow & ice over the mountains. Snow: Dusting-2″ west of I-81 w/ 2-3″ possible along I-68 & elevations above 2,500 ft. A light glaze of ice is also possible on elevated surfaces. Watch for slick travel later this afternoon/evening.”

Temperatures will remain in the 40s overnight and reach 50° for most of MoCo and high temperatures in the 40s for the rest of the week with Saturday looking like the coldest day (high temps below 45°).

Phase Two of Bus Bay Closures to Impact Glenmont Metro Station Beginning Monday, Nov. 28

Last September, Metro began replacing the glass canopies at Glenmont Station. During glass canopy construction, some bays will be closed in phases and the associated bus routes will be temporarily relocated. Phase two of construction is set to begin on Monday, Nov. 28, and last through mid-January 2023.

Rockville Listed in Top 20 of List of “Cities With The Biggest Holiday Budgets”

With last year’s holiday spending having increased 14.1% to a record $886.7 billion, the personal-finance website WalletHub today released its 2022 Holiday Budgets by City report, with Rockville coming in at #19. Nearby Ellicott City came in 9th on the list. It also released its free tool that calculates personalized holiday budgets for all WalletHub members between now and Dec. 25.

To help consumers avoid post-holiday regret, WalletHub used several key metrics, such as income, age and savings-to-monthly expenses ratio, to estimate the maximum spending amounts for consumers in over 550 U.S. cities.

County Seeks High School Students as Ambassadors to Improve Traffic Safety

Applications are now open. The deadline to apply is Wednesday, Nov. 30. Interested students can learn about the program and apply here. Applicants will be notified of acceptance by Dec. 14. They will be required to attend a virtual orientation from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 7.

Students can earn more than 40 Student Service Learning (SSL) hours for participating in the program. The youth ambassadors will complete the program in May 2023, where they will share project plans, outcomes and best practices at a graduation ceremony.

$50,000 Winning Powerball Ticket Sold in MoCo Remains Unclaimed; Two $1 Million Tickets Sold in Maryland Also Unclaimed

A $50,000 winning Powerball lottery ticket sold November 7 at the Check Cash Depot at 8476 Piney Branch Road in Silver Spring remains unclaimed as of Tuesday, November 15. The ticket was purchased for last week’s historic Powerball drawing that had a jackpot of over $2 billion. Outside of MoCo, a $1 million Mega Millions ticket sold November 8 at 7-Eleven (9151 Riggs Road) in Adelphi and a $1 million Powerball ticket sold November 7 at One Mile Liquor (6600 Baltimore National Pike, Suite L) in Catonsville have also yet to be claimed. Winners of prizes larger than $25,000 must redeem their tickets at the Maryland Lottery Customer Resource Center in Baltimore, which is open by appointment only. “RockWood Day” Brings Together Staff of Rockville High School and Wood Middle School

Last month, school staff at Rockville High School and Earle B. Wood Middle School held a day of learning, inspiration and collaboration. The first ever “RockWood Day” brought them together to discuss improving instructional strategies and meet the needs of all students.

Colleagues examined a case study through the lens of their beliefs and the principles of equity-centered trauma-informed education, arriving at reimagined approaches to teaching and learning. One staff member said, “I liked the opportunity to discuss the issues with an expanded group of colleagues” and another commented: “Bouncing new ideas of each other is impactful.”
