Adam Schefter of ESPN reported on Wednesday evening that the Washington Commanders have informed cornerback Danny Johnson of his release.

Johnson has been with Washington for six seasons, having started 8 games for the team in that time. In March, he was signed to a two-year deal that included $2.75 million guaranteed and will now be subject to waivers.

Johnson has one career interception in his six seasons. He started four games for the team last year. Johnson joined Washington as an undated free agent in 2018 out of Southern and became a fan-favorite, first fighting for a roster spot and then becoming a reliable backup who could start in a pinch.

In a corresponding move, the team has claimed cornerback Kyu Blu Kelly off waivers from the Green Bay Packers, according to WaPo’s Nicki Jhabvala. Kelly was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the fifth round, 157th overall, of the 2023 NFL Draft. He was waived prior to the season and signed by the Seahawks where he played five games. He was then released and signed with the Packers where he played one game before being released.
