Sherwood High School Wins Division 1 MCPS Pom Championships

The 2023-24 Sherwood Varsity Poms won the Division 1 MCPS Pom Championships that were held on Saturday, February 3, 2024.

The team is made up of fifteen dedicated and talented young scholar athletes who demonstrate their passion for dance and serve their community. They are coached by Jeanne Laeng and Dottie Yahr, and are led by captains Katie and Isabelle, and co-captains Veronica and Claire. Rounding out the team are seniors Brianna, Alexis, and Gigi; juniors Eleni, Courtney, and Amanda; sophomore Shailee; and freshmen Claire, Orianne, Sonia, and Matilda.

The Sherwood Poms season began in mid-August, and in the weeks leading up to the county championships, the team competed in three invitationals. This year’s motto has been “All We’ve Got” and the Sherwood Poms did just that, earning first place at the Springbrook Invitational and Northwest Invitational, second place at the Blake Invitational, and culminating their season with the championship title. The coaches and captains choreograph all their routines including the championship routine performed at counties. The team also supports numerous volunteer endeavors in their school and community. The girls would like to thank their families and friends for their dedication and love throughout the long season, with special thanks to their team managers, drummers, principal, Mr. Timothy Britton, and their athletic director, Mr. Jason Woodward, for his invaluable support.
