Beyond MoCo: Ribbon Cutting For Platoon 22 Veterans Services Center in November 10th in Frederick

The Platoon Veteran Services Center at Goodwill (VSC) Will Offer Veterans, and First Responders, and Their Families Access to Resources Needed for Successful Transition

Press release: Platoon 22 moves into its first brick-and-mortar location! A host of federal, state, and local leaders will be on hand for the official ribbon cutting of the Platoon Veterans Services Center at Goodwill (VSC) on November 10 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The VSC, a partnership between Platoon 22 and Goodwill of Monocacy Valley, will bring local Veteran service providers together in one place to provide essential programs and services to aid in the transition from service to civilian life. Successful Veteran transition is our purpose. The VSC will offer a wide array of resources and services to support Veterans, First Responders, and their family in every step to flourish, discover a sense of community, and find purpose. We are dedicated to identifying needs, eliminating barriers, and providing individualized services and partner programs to each and every serviceman and woman.

“With over 340,000 Veterans in the state of Maryland, and 70% of them within a hours’ drive from the VSC, our partnership has allowed us to create a space for any service member to access the much-need resources and support to transition from service to civilian life,” said Danny Farrar, founder and executive director, Platoon 22. “Goodwill’s commitment has given us not only the tools to bring Veteran service providers together but has generously offered the space to Platoon 22 and our non-profit partners with reduced rent.”

Platoon 22 will occupy office space and serve as the operational manager in the Platoon Veteran Services Centerlocated at 1750 Monocacy Blvd, Frederick MD 21701 (Cross streets Monocacy Blvd & Progress Ct.). Platoon 22 is a non-profit organization whose mission is to end Veteran suicide through successful transitional services. At the conclusion of military service some lose a sense of purpose and struggle to transition into civilian life. The open house will take place on November 10 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. featuring all building partners and off-site Veteran service providers. Service providers that will occupy permanent office space include Platoon 22, Goodwill Industries, Maryland Department of Veterans Affairs, Martinsburg Vet Center, Warrior Canine Connection, Thrive Home Care, and Chaplain services. Off-site partners will be able to provide services with the use of drop-in office hours at the VSC. Other amenities include conference rooms, a classroom, computer lab, and activity center. The services and amenities are meant to provide a comfortable and welcoming space to learn more about resources, engage in care, or simply a space to connect with other Veterans.

The VSC is part of the Goodwill’s main campus; “We wanted to create a space that the entire community can utilize,” said Holly Schor, vice president of operations, Goodwill Industries of Monocacy Valley.  The VSC, located at 1730 Monocacy Boulevard in Frederick, officially opened its doors in October and is currently serving Veterans Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Most service providers are by appointment only, but Platoon 22 is accepting walk-ins currently. Visit www.platoon22.org and www.platoonvsc.org for more information on available services.

The Platoon Veteran Services Center at Goodwill will offer expansive essential services to Veterans as they return home from their military experience to offer the best-in-class transitional support needed to successful reengage in society. The 13,000 sqft dedicated Veteran space will offer:

A space for camaraderie, recreation, and fellowship
Access to Veteran benefits navigation and care coordination
Mental health counseling and rehabilitative services (the VSC is not a crisis center)
Career coaching and training opportunities
Suicide prevention and resources
On-site shower and laundry facilities to support homeless veterans (no shelter services)
Strategic partnerships with the larger veteran services community to promote best practices in service delivery, streamlining of resources, and seamlessness in programmatic referrals

Come tour the VSC and learn more about the Veteran resources by joining us at the Grand Opening event on November 10 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Veterans already have access to scheduling appointments to learn more about the services offered.
