Montgomery Parks

Montgomery Parks received $5 million in capital funding for five park projects from the state of Maryland during the 2025 legislative session. The department will use the funding to renovate parks and playgrounds in various legislative districts in Montgomery County.

Beyond MoCo

The roar of the crowd, the clash of titans, the Cold War-era villainy– these are the images that likely spring to mind when the name Nikolai Volkoff is mentioned. For wrestling fans of a certain era, Volkoff, often paired with the likes of the Iron Sheik, was a formidable and heat-generating force, a symbol of Soviet strength in the squared circle that went head to head with Hulk Hogan in 1985. But beyond the bombastic persona and the signature rendition of the Soviet national anthem, there was another side to Josip Nikolai Peruzović, a man who found a quiet and fulfilling life in Maryland, far removed from the wrestling ring (per Steve Stasiak of Book Pro Wrestlers).

DMV

The Eater DC “38 Essential Restaurants Around DC” list offers a selection of defining culinary destinations that showcase DC and its suburbs. Five restaurants in Maryland are currently on the spring 2025 edition of the list (last updated on April 8th) with four of them in Montgomery County:

Boyds

On Monday, FOX 5 shared a video submitted by a viewer showing a possible alligator sighting in a small pond at the SoccerPlex in Boyds/Germantown. Park Police said they checked the pond and surrounding area but found no evidence of an alligator.

Gaithersburg

As part of Green Month, the City of Gaithersburg recognizes individuals and organizations demonstrating outstanding environmental stewardship in the Gaithersburg community with Environmental Awards. Mayor Jud Ashman and members of the City Council presented the awards at a ceremony on Monday, April 7, 2025. A proclamation designating April as Gaithersburg Green Month and April 25 as Arbor Day in the City of Gaithersburg was presented during the Mayor and City Council meeting following the awards ceremony.

Maryland

Maryland has a new multi-millionaire thanks to a $5 million Maryland Lottery scratch-off win, a player in Hagerstown hit the Multi-Match jackpot and picked up $870,000, and two FAST PLAY progressive jackpot games, one each in Fallston and Severna Park, gave players paydays well in excess of $100,000, all in the past week. Montgomery County was home to winners of $50,000, $10,000, and more prizes (lineup of all winners available below).

Sandy Spring Friends School (SSFS), located at 16923 Norwood Rd, Sandy Spring, MD, has announced that the school intends to close following the completion of the 2024-25 school year. The school has been operating since 1961.
