On October 15 at approximately 4:15 pm, Takoma Park Police responded to a theft scheme reported at Ria Money Exchange, located inside Megamart Supermarket in the 1100 block of University Blvd. The incident occurred on October 13, 2024, around 3:30 pm.

For Reader’s Digest’s eight ‘Nicest Places in America’ annual contest, the magazine started by asking readers to be “scouts around the country and send us your nominations for the nicest places you know.” The magazine’s editorial team vets each place carefully, whittling down the list with the help of its panel of judges (including the Today’s Show Al Roker) “who know a thing or two about niceness themselves.” This year, the list included one place in Maryland.
The Takoma Park Police Department has provided an update to its investigation of “Threats of Mass Violence” made by Yonas Alemseged Harris when he sent emails to Montgomery College and the Montgomery County Police Department threatening to “shoot up” the school.
On October 16, at approximately 12:11 am, Takoma Park Police responded to the 900 block of Merrimac Drive (7-11), for the report of a stolen vehicle. The victim’s 2018 black Ford Explorer was stolen moments after it was parked. During the investigation, the stolen vehicle was found fully engulfed in flames in Sligo Creek.
Hesler Saul Sanchez Cruz, a 45-year-old husband and father, was killed early Sunday morning in Wheaton when he was stabbed on the 11300 block of Fern Street in Wheaton. A suspect, 30-year-old Jose Emilio Ortiz Alba, was arrested and charged in Virginia and will be extradited to Montgomery County. Cruz’s daughter has started a GoFundMe fundraiser to help with funeral arrangements.
Per the GoFundMe fundraiser: “We tragically lost our dad, Saul, on Sunday morning. He was a vibrant man, who made everyone laugh until tears came out of our eyes and was the greatest story teller who could make you feel fear, happiness, and utter amazement. In this difficult time, we ask of you to help us with our cause and donate whatever you can so that we can lay our dad to rest. Thank you all in [advance].”
The locally owned and operated Massage Envy at 127 Crown Park Ave, next to Coastal Flats, in Gaithersburg has announced that it will be moving to Germantown starting December 1st.
The 2025 Old Farmer’s Almanac is now available everywhere complete with its 2024-2025 winter weather forecast. Winter arrives this year on December 21, 2024 and sometimes brings shoveling, snow blowing, dealing with bad roads, and unbearable temperatures with it. Lately, we haven’t had too much snow to talk about in our area, and this winter, according to the almanac, is expected to be”mild and snowy” for our area (map available above) but differs based on specific location. On Tuesday, Montgomery County Council Vice President Kate Stewart introduced the “Bring Your Own Bag” bill that would ban businesses from distributing single-use plastic bags and increase the fee on paper bags. (more…)
