The City of Gaithersburg presents its 31st annual celebration of Oktoberfest on Sunday, October 13, 2024, from noon to 5 p.m. The festival takes place in and around the Arts Barn, Kentlands Mansion, Kentlands Village Green and along Main Street and Inspiration Lane. Admission and parking are free. Road closures are listed below.

DMV

On Sunday, the 4-1 Washington Commanders will face off against the 3-2 Baltimore Ravens in Baltimore. Despite the Commanders’ strong start to the season, the Ravens are favored to win by 6.5 points as of Monday morning. With both teams performing well, we took the opportunity to revisit an intriguing and often debated question: Are the Baltimore Ravens considered a home team for all of Maryland?

Crime

Haotian Sun (34, Baltimore, MD) and Pengfei Xue (34, Germantown, MD) were sentenced today for participating in a “sophisticated scheme to defraud Apple Inc. out of millions of dollars’ worth of iPhones.” U.S. District Court Judge Timothy J. Kelly sentenced Sun to 57 months in prison, and sentenced Xue to 54 months in prison.

Gaithersburg

Travilah Elementary School, located at 13801 Dufief Mill Rd., opened in 1960 in what is now known as North Potomac. It is named for Travilah Clagett, who was the first postmaster for the area, leading to the United States Post Office using the name “Travilah’ to identify the previously unnamed location. MCPS

As we hit the midway point of the MCPS high school football season, Montgomery County’s standout players and teams have begun to separate themselves from the pack. From dynamic quarterbacks lighting up the passing game to workhorse running backs carrying their teams, here’s a breakdown of the county’s statistical leaders through four weeks of action (does not include week 5 stats from this week), based on data submitted by MCPS coaches:

Passing Leaders: At the top of the leaderboard is Blake’s Kirby Matson, who’s been slinging the ball with precision and consistency. Matson has racked up 802 passing yards, leading a balanced Blake offense that’s made them a tough out for any opponent. Close behind is Wootton’s Humphries, who has thrown for 709 yards, keeping Wootton’s offense afloat despite a tough schedule.
