Approximately 150 Business and Public Sector Leaders Participate in Cybersecurity Conference Co-Hosted By The MD U.S. Attorney’s Office And The University Of Maryland

On November 6, 2023, approximately 150 business and public sector leaders participated in a cybersecurity conference co-hosted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland and the University of Maryland.  The conference included panels of cybersecurity experts from government and the private sector discussing the emerging threats, best practices, and effective collaboration between federal, state, and local agencies, the private sector, and law enforcement.

“Cybercrime is an ongoing threat to all of us in Maryland.  The time to talk about preventing and responding to a cyber incident is before something happens,” said United States Attorney Erek L. Barron. “I am grateful for the thoughtful and frank conversations the conference inspired and I look forward to continued collaboration and partnership between the government, business, and public sectors to protect our critical infrastructure.  I also want to thank our partners at the University of Maryland for their co-sponsorship of this important conference.”

The DMV’s Winter Lantern Festival Begins November 24th

Learn about the culture and craftsmanship of traditional Chinese lantern festivals at the Winter Lantern Festival Washington, located at Lerner Town Square at Tysons II (8025 Galleria Dr, Tysons, VA 22102). Modern LED lights are embellished by traditionally hand-crafted lantern frames made from small pieces of classically made Chinese silk cloth and steel wire. All lanterns are created by artisans, some of which have over 20 years of experience in their trade and bring magical folklorical creatures to life. Each unique piece holds a story of its own that will be told to visitors to help contextualize their experience even more.

“With our lights and lanterns, we hope to provide an unforgettable experience for all. This year, not only will we bring lanterns, we are also excited to bring more family fun such as, dino rides, picture taking opportunities to further expand the entire experience.” The exhibition is held in an outdoor venue with indoor space available if you need to take a break during the 60-120 minutes experience. Though it is held in an outdoor venue, it is a rain or shine event. Feel free to take photos as new this year are a few figures just for picture taking. The venue reminds you to please make sure not to disturb others while taking photos. City of Rockville Unofficial Election Results; Residents Also Voted On Allowing 16/17 Year-Olds and Non-Citizens to Vote, Term Limits, and Representative Districts

Per the City of Rockville: Rockville voters elected Monique Ashton mayor with 7,190 votes, or 58.71% of the total, according to unofficial results in the City of Rockville’s vote-by-mail election, which were announced early today. Six councilmembers were also elected: Kate Fulton; Adam Van Grack; Izola (Zola) Shaw; David Myles; Barry Jackson; and Marissa Valeri.

The Mayor and Council serve four-year terms. Mayoral challenger Mark Pierzchala received 5,006 votes, or 40.88%. There were 51 write-in votes for mayor. The top six vote-getters for council seats were:

City of Gaithersburg Unofficial Results for Nov. 7th Election

Per the City of Gaithersburg: Unofficial results for the November 7, 2023, municipal election for three City Council Members have been announced:

The top three candidates with the highest number of votes were Neil Harris, who received 2,900 votes (24.57%), Yamil Hernández, who received 2,189 votes (18.55%), and Robert T. Wu, who received 2,932 votes (24.84%).

“Big Winter” Expected as NBC4 Releases 2023-2024 Winter Weather Outlook

Yesterday we took a look at Doug Kammerer’s Winter Weather Outlook map and highlighted a few of the important items he went over on a subsequent Facebook live. Today, we’ll be analyzing the outlook as a whole, as many snow lovers are excited for what could bring a few feet of snow to the area.

Kammerer and Storm Team4 state that “we could see one or two big snowstorms that really make their mark on the winter of 2023-2024.” In our eyes, that means a storm that drops at least six inches across the region, but could also bring snow that’s measured in feet to the area. Since the El Niño patter is expected to bring above average temperatures and an active storm track, plenty of storms will come in the form as rain. The snow will be there when we are dealing with colder temperatures, which is what they expect January and February to bring.

Whetstone Elementary School Rolls Out the Red Carpet

Whetstone Elementary School, located at 19201 Thomas Farm Road, had a tradition that celebrates students who have demonstrated the school’s Wildcat core values. Each quarter, the school literally rolls out the red carpet.

Students chosen by their teachers receive a certificate and dance down a red carpet while their classmates, teachers, principal, mascot Wendy the Wildcat, and caregivers clap and cheer them on. “Our caregivers love this event and appreciate the acknowledgement of their children,” said principal Loretta Woods in an update by MCPS. Woods started the tradition when she arrived at the school as a way to show the students they are special, supported and loved by all and invite parents and caregivers to join in that celebration.

Germantown Man Sentenced to Five Years in Fentanyl Distribution Case

Per the Office of the Montgomery County State’s Attorney: “In the Circuit Court for Montgomery County, MD, the Honorable Eric Johnson sentenced defendant, Eon Brummell, 27, of Germantown, to 20 years in prison suspend all but 5 years to serve and five years of supervised probation upon release.

On Oct. 30th, 2023, Brummell pleaded guilty to a Distribution of Narcotics charge that was filed in May of 2023 stemming from an incident in May 2022. He also pleaded guilty to Possession of a Large Amount of Narcotics due to the fact that he had 634 pills containing fentanyl in his possession when he was arrested in June of 2023. Judge Johnson issued his sentence at the time of the plea hearing.

Holiday “Barket” Takes Place on Saturday, November 18 at Cabin John Regional Park

Montgomery Parks is inviting dog owners to leash up their pups and jump into the holiday season at the Holiday Barket at Cabin John Regional Park (7400 Tuckerman Lane, Bethesda, MD 20817) on Saturday, November 18 from 11am until 2pm. The Barket will feature live music, refreshments for sale, a canine photo booth with the Grinch, and plenty of pet-themed shopping.

Guests are encouraged to bring blankets or chairs and relax as they listen to rock music from the band Capital Effect at the amphitheater stage. They can also visit the dog park at Cabin John Regional Park where dogs can romp off-leash or take a stroll on the Cabin John Trail, which includes a loop around the event site. Providers of pet-related services such as adoption, training and grooming will be on site with information about their offerings. And Maryland-based businesses will be selling pet-themed gifts for pet lovers, as well as gifts and treats for pets.
