A new Civil War Trails site honoring Zedekiah Thompson, a formerly enslaved man who self-emancipated and served in the U.S. Army, has been established at North Washington Street and Wood Lane in Rockville as part of Black History Month, recognizing his service in the 1st United States Colored Troops and his contributions to history. Three individuals were convicted in Baltimore City for illegally disposing of hazardous materials, following an investigation by the Maryland Attorney General’s Office, Baltimore City Fire Department, and Maryland Department of the Environment, with sentencing scheduled for March and April 2025. History

Rockville is celebrating Black History Month in February with the theme “African Americans and Labor”, featuring a new podcast “Conversations in Black”, social media highlights of Black city leaders, and a Rockville 11 video showcasing a new mural at Lincoln Park Community Center, created with community input and funded by a $30,000 Maryland State Arts Council grant.

Crime

On Friday, Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) officers arrested a suspect who left a Glenmont 7-11 with a suspicious bulge and entered a white Nissan Altima on Georgia Ave with a passenger holding a handgun, leading to the recovery of a Glock 27 and two loaded magazines. (more…)
