Beyond MoCo

A $50,000 winning Powerball ticket was sold at an Anne Arundel County Giant. According to the Maryland Lottery, “Check your Powerball tickets from Monday’s drawing, Maryland! Even though no one hit the estimated $145 million jackpot, there was one $50,000-winning ticket sold in our state. The Maryland Lottery is looking for the lucky player who bought the third-tier winning ticket at Giant #0358 located at 573 Ritchie Highway in Severna Park.

The winning numbers in the Aug. 7 drawing were 6, 13, 20, 35 and 54; the Powerball was 22 and the Power Play multiplier was X2. In addition to the third-tier winner, Marylanders won 13,401 prizes ranging from $4 to $200. Lottery officials encourage winners to sign the back of their tickets immediately and put them in a safe location. Crime

Per the Maryland State Police: Maryland State Police investigators are continuing an investigation into the death of a state prison inmate in Allegany County. The inmate is identified as Moise Louis, 34.  Louis was declared deceased by emergency medical service personnel. He was a state prison inmate serving time at the Western Correctional Institution in Cumberland. A suspect, also an inmate, has been identified.  He is being held in another location within the Division of Correction.  He has not been charged at this time and is not being identified until charges are placed.

Shortly after 12:00 noon today, the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit was contacted by investigators from the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Internal Investigative Unit (DPSCS IIU) about an inmate death.  Investigators told State Police Louis was found in his cell with multiple injuries. State Police Homicide Unit investigators are continuing the investigation. Assistance has been provided by State Police crime scene technicians and investigators with the DPSCS Internal Investigative Unit.  Upon completion, the investigation will be presented to the Allegany County State’s Attorney’s Office for review regarding charges.  The investigation continues.


Restaurant

Fabulous Lounge is scheduled to open in Downtown Silver Spring on August 18, according to a report by Source of the Spring. The restaurant/club will be located at 949 Bonifant St, the former site of Hub Lounge.  According to a grand opening announcement, “Our state-of-the-art sound system, stunning lighting effects, and opulent décor will transport you to a world where indulgence and style unite, where every moment becomes Fabulous.”

MDLottery

A Montgomery County resident is $50,000 after purchasing a winning scratch-off lottery ticket at the Crown Gas Station (17700 Elgin Road) in Poolesville. Full story below courtesy of the Maryland Lottery:

“An unusual set of three back-to-back scratch-off wins at a Poolesville business made a Montgomery County resident $50,000 richer recently. The 64-year-old was traveling past the MOAB Crown gas station at 17700 Elgin Road in Poolesville and stopped in to play scratch-offs, which are his favorite Lottery game. To his surprise, he won $50 on a game and used some of the prize money to keep playing instant tickets.

MCFRS

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a call for a fire in the basement of Rumba Y Carbon, a restaurant located at 11222 Grandview Ave (off of Veirs Mill Rd) in Wheaton, early Sunday morning.  According to MCFRS Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer, the call came in at approximately 3:30am and approximately 65 firefighters responded to the call to get the fire under control and eventually extinguished.

On Monday, Piringer tweeted that the “fire is still under investigation, but origin & cause appears to be suspicious in nature.” Total damage is estimated to be $750K, including $500K to structure and $250K to contents. One employee of the restaurant was transported to the hospital with minor burns and other non-life threatening injuries. We will post an update if additional information becomes available.


Maryland

Per the State of Maryland:  Governor Wes Moore this weekend embarked upon a two-day tour of Mountain Maryland to mark the Moore-Miller administration’s first six months in office. Governor Moore was joined by Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller for a convening of the administration’s cabinet at Rocky Gap Casino Resort and community engagement events in Allegany and Garrett Counties.

“At the halfway point of the first year of this administration, we have achieved a lot to be proud of—but we have much more work to do,” said Gov. Moore. “We must continue to work in partnership from Mountain Maryland to the Eastern Shore to build an economy that leaves no one behind and create new pathways to prosperity to make this Maryland’s decade.”


Maryland

Per the State of Maryland: Governor Wes Moore today announced the fiscal year 2024 funding to support the Maryland Manufacturing 4.0 program, a growing initiative that provides grants to small and mid-sized Maryland manufacturers to invest in Industry 4.0 technologies. The new round of funding, administered by the Maryland Department of Commerce, will provide businesses with a total of $1 million to modernize their operations.

“Opportunities like the Maryland Manufacturing 4.0 grant program help to not only position our small and mid-sized businesses for advancement, but also ensure Maryland remains competitive in leveraging innovative technology,” said Gov. Moore. “Actively investing in our state’s companies will help strengthen Maryland’s manufacturing industry and unleash its potential for growth and success.”


Gaithersburg

“No one hit the Mega Millions jackpot over the weekend, boosting the game’s top prize to $1.55 billion, but six players in Maryland won $10,000 each in the game in the past week, one each in Annapolis, Edgewater, Frederick, Leonardtown, Ocean City and Silver Spring. The $1.55 billion jackpot is the largest Mega Millions jackpot ever, and the third largest U.S. jackpot. The biggest Lottery wins in the past week, however, were four prizes between $100,000 and $500,000 on scratch-off tickets purchased in Adelphi, Cumberland, Perry Hall and Pikesville.


MoCo Government

Per Montgomery County: Three-time Grammy® Award-winning vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater will headline the 18th annual Silver Spring Jazz Festival on Saturday, Sept. 9, at Veterans Plaza in Downtown Silver Spring. The free festival will take place from 3-10 p.m. Bridgewater will take the mainstage at 8:30 p.m. Veterans Plaza is located at the corner of Ellsworth Drive and Fenton Street, adjacent to the Silver Spring Civic Building.

The Silver Spring Jazz Festival is a free event. Restaurants featuring a variety of cuisines surround the festival site. Attendees are encouraged to use public transportation and to bring a blanket and/or low back lawn chairs for seating. The festival site is a short walk from the Silver Spring Metro Station.
