Montgomery Parks is hosting its February virtual speaker series on the topic of public art on Thursday, February 22, 2023, from 3-4 p.m. This session features art expert Jack Becker discussing how public art can act as a cultural barometer, revealing a society’s values and struggles.
Becker says the social upheaval of racial justice protests and the COVID pandemic in 2020 caused art agencies to pause large-scale projects and re-evaluate their collections. Meanwhile, a growing group of upstart artists stepped into the void, bringing fresh perspectives to public spaces.

About the Speaker: Jack Becker has worked in public art for 45 years. He is an artist, educator, writer, and arts administrator. Best known as the founder of Forecast Public Art based in Minnesota, he also founded Public Art Review, an international magazine devoted to contemporary public art.
