Notes From Governor Hogan’s Press Conference Providing Update on Maryland’s Response to the Insurrection at the Capitol
Governor Hogan instructed Maryland State Police Superintendent Jerry Jones to activate mobile field force. Troopers provided assistance both Capitol Police at the Capitol and Library of Congress and to the Metro Police Department for the enforcement of curfew violations.
Governor Hogan mobilized a National Guard response force, but was denied approval to deploy them. Under law, authorization from the Pentagon to send the Guard into DC is required.
It took 1.5 hours for the federal government to grant permission to send the state’s national guard to the Capitol yesterday.
Army Secretary Kevin McCarthy eventually called the governor to authorize the Maryland National Guard’s deployment.
The Maryland National Guard’s mission in DC has been extended through the inauguration and the end of the month and will provide perimeter security around the Capitol.
