Last week, the Montgomery County Education & Culture (EC) Committee unanimously recommended restoring $49.5 million in funding to the district’s fiscal year 2025 budget. SEIU Local 500, MCEA, and MCAAP/MCBOA have released a statement strongly supporting EC’s recommendation as a solution to secure the funding needed to preserve the district’s ability to provide high-quality learning experiences for students and district-wide staffing needs.  “This welcome development comes on the heels of County Executive Marc Erlich’s egregious proposal to cut $55.7 million from the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) budget.” Full statement below:

Beyond MoCo

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reported earlier this week that 52 white-tailed deer sampled within Allegany, Baltimore, Frederick, Montgomery, and Washington counties in 2023 tested positive for chronic wasting disease, a neurological disease found in deer, elk, and moose.

Event

Bring your family and friends to our free , all-day outdoor Oktoberfest celebration. These will be an outdoor craft fair featuring local artisans and professional woodworkers, a chainsaw carving, woodworking and tool demonstrations by Festool, Montgomery Wood Turners and Carvers. Community members invited to sign up to testify on update to the policy that determines adequacy of public facilities for development in Montgomery County 

The Montgomery County Planning Board scheduled a public hearing on the 2024-2028 update to the Growth and Infrastructure Policy (GIP) for Thursday, May 23 at 6 p.m. in the Second Floor Auditorium of The M-NCPPC’s Wheaton Headquarters at 2425 Reedie Drive, Wheaton, MD, 20902.

Solaire Social, located on the ground floor of the Solaire 8200 apartments at 8200 Dixon Ave in Silver Spring, is scheduled to open on Friday, May 17.
