The following message regarding COVID-19 procedures for the 2023-2024 school year was emailed to MCPS staff on Monday, Aug. 28.

Churchill has re-established themselves as a very good team over the last two years, going 17-6 and making it to the state quarterfinal last year. They did have an easier schedule that cycle though, and this year they will be put to the test against MoCo’s best. However, early signs seem to indicate they’re up for a fight. David Avit is a human bowling ball and one of the top RBs in a year full of talent at that position. He will be guided by one of the best in the biz, as Dave Mencarini has returned to MoCo after a decade-long absence as the Bulldogs’ OC. Given the RB talent he coached at QO from 2004-13, it should be interesting to see what he will be able to get out of Avit. Junior QB Vasi Hallas looks to be the next man up under center, and senior WR Layton Johnson Jr., who’s picked up a few D3 offers, looks to be his top weapon aside from Avit.
Seneca Valley has managed to reassert themselves as a consistent top 6 team following the opening of their new building, and if it was business as usual for them this past offseason, I’d take them in this matchup in a heartbeat. SV should still field a competitive team this year. Their strength is their backfield, which is probably the most experienced in the county: senior QB Elijah Frazier and RB Jorden Hungerford will both be 3-year starters. Frazier is a frontrunner for all-county QB, and Hungerford is a highly underrated RB who would probably be much more well-known if he wasn’t contemporaries with the likes of Iverson Howard, Gideon Ituka, David Avit, and several others.
Per the State of Maryland: Governor Wes Moore this week hosted the U.S. Climate Alliance Secretariat for a meeting at the State House in Annapolis. During the meeting, the governor and the alliance discussed the Moore-Miller administration’s action to combat climate change and the path toward reaching Maryland’s ambitious climate goals.
“I see the climate crisis in our neighborhoods every day—it’s why we’re working to supercharge clean energy manufacturing and why we’re working to make our communities more resilient,” said Gov. Moore. “We must do all we can, and we must do it in partnership, to ensure a cleaner, greener Maryland–now and for future generations.”

According to Gaithersburg Police, “On August 26, 2023 at 3:22 a.m., officers responded to the 100 block of Bralan Lane for the report of a theft from vehicle.
Responding officers observed two suspects running from the area and pursued after them on foot. One of the suspects was apprehended. Further investigation revealed that the suspects entered and rummaged through multiple vehicles in the area. Located on the suspect who was apprehended was a loaded 9mm handgun. While checking for additional targeted vehicles, officers located a Toyota SUV with out of state registration plates that had bullet holes in it. After conducting a stolen check of the vehicle, it was revealed that the vehicle was stolen out of Montgomery County in July 2023 and was used in an armed robbery in Prince George’s County in August. Any potential connection between this vehicle and the suspects is under investigation.

Per the City of Rockville: The city is seeking community input as work on Rockville’s first Pedestrian Master Plan continues this fall. The plan will guide the development, construction and maintenance of safe, convenient, and equitable walking and rolling facilities across the city. Walking and rolling describes mobility that does not use motor vehicles, e-scooters or bicycles. This includes walking with or without a white cane, audio-assistance device or walker; running; or using a wheelchair, knee-walker, mobility scooter or stroller. View the draft plan and submit comments to city staff via email or through the Pedestrian Master Plan Draft Survey at engagerockville.com/pedestrian-master-plan. The survey asks community members to identify what parts of the plan work well, what changes are needed and what’s missing. All comments will receive a response and will be shared with the city’s Planning Commission and Mayor and Council for their public hearings.
Per the City of Rockville: In their ongoing fight to bring awareness to the national impact of opioid addiction and signal hope for recovery, Rockville’s Mayor and Council proclaimed September as National Recovery Month at their Monday, Aug. 7 meeting. The theme for National Recovery Month is “Recovery is for Everyone: Every Person, Every Family, Every Community.” The proclamation states that: “The Rockville Goes Purple initiative is increasing awareness of the dangers of opioids and other substances, and strives to reduce the number of lives lost to drug addiction in our community.”
Lights at City Hall, the Rockville City Police Department headquarters and other city and county facilities will once again shine purple throughout the month. The theme of the campaign is “Opioids: Let’s Talk About It,” which encourages dialogue about, and openness around, the problems of opioid addiction, and awareness about the dangers of stigmatizing addiction.
According to public safety reporter Cordell Pugh, a bicyclist was struck and critically injured on Southbound Frederick Rd (MD-355) near Gunners Branch Rd/Scenery Dr around 9:35pm on Wednesday, August 30th. Montgomery County Police tweeted the following at 10:22pm: “TRAFFIC ADVISORY – N. Frederick Avenue is closed at Plummer Drive due to a traffic collision. Drivers are advised to seek an alternate route. Expect significant delays.”

At approximately 6:35PM on Wednesday evening, an individual handling a rifle accidentally shot himself on Willard Avenue near MD-355 Wisconsin Avenue. The incident occurred while the man was in a car that was parked near the outdoor dining area of a restaurant, according to our public safety reporter Cordell Pugh. Westbound Willard was briefly blocked by the response while Montgomery County Police 2nd District handling the scene.
The Commander of MCPD’s 2nd district tweeted the following update, “Officers are in the area of Willard/Friendship Blvd for an accidental discharge of a firearm. There is no threat to the community at this time. Adult male transported with non-life-threatening injuries.”

Peter Chang is coming to 637 N Frederick Ave in Gaithersburg, the former location of Ichiban Restaurant. Ichiban closed in September 2021 after 35 years in business. Chef Peter Chang’s signature dishes include Boneless Whole Fish, Dry Fried Eggplant, Crispy Pork Belly, Cilantro Lime Fish, Duck In Stone Pot, and Beef in Sichuan Chili. Peter Chang opened its Rockville location at 20A Maryland Ave in 2016, and Q by Peter Chang opened at 4500 East-West Hwy in Bethesda in 2017. The restaurant is hoping to open by the beginning of February 2024.
In May, Peter Chang visited the culinary program at Paint Branch High School to teach students two recipes inspired by his family and culture as a part of Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month.
Charleys Cheesesteaks & Wings is now open inside of the Germantown Walmart at 20910 Frederick Rd, in the space formerly occupied by McDonald’s. Earlier this year, Charleys also opened a location at 19877 Century Blvd in Germantown, in the space that was previously home to Roll by Goodyear and Yogi Castle in the Shops at Town Center & Century Station shopping center.
Charleys is a Philly cheesesteak franchise that opened its first location across the campus of Ohio State University in 1986. While studying real estate at the school, Charley Shin worked in his mother’s Japanese/Korean restaurant in Columbus, Ohio. A wrong turn on a family trip to New York City resulted in Charley’s discovery of the Philly cheesesteak. Charley convinced his mother to sell her restaurant, and invest her life savings of $48,000 into Charley’s, a 450-square-foot restaurant across the street from Ohio State’s campus.
