Virtual Public Meeting on the Schaeffer Road Bridge Over Little Seneca Creek Replacement Project in Poolesville to be Held on Wednesday, Sept. 6

Per MCDOT: On Wednesday, Sept. 6, at 7 p.m., the Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) will hold a virtual public meeting to discuss the replacement of the Schaeffer Road Bridge (No. M-0137) over Little Seneca Creek in Poolesville. At the virtual public information meeting MCDOT will present the project details, costs, schedules and obtain public comments and answer questions. The bridge inspection revealed that the structure is in poor condition, considered structurally deficient and needs replacement. The completed project will enhance safety for motorists and bicyclists as they travel to nearby schools and facilities.

Online registration is required to attend. On the morning of the meeting, an email with a Zoom link will be sent to registrants. Prior to the virtual meeting, the public is encouraged to review the project files on the project website.

EchoStar, Parent Company of Germantown-Based Hughes, and Dish Network Have Signed Merger Agreement

EchoStar, the parent company of Germantown-based broadband satellite services provider Hughes, and Dish Network have signed an all-stock merger agreement with the goal of establishing a global connectivity provider to businesses, governments and consumers. The boards of directors at both companies unanimously approved the deal and all parties expect to complete the transaction by the end of 2023, according to a joint statement released Tuesday.

Under the agreement, Dish Network shareholders will own 69 percent of the combined firm and EchoStar shareholders will hold the remaining 31 percent. Charles Egren, co-founder and chairman of the two companies, will serve as executive chairman of the merged entity upon the deal’s closure, while EchoStar President and CEO Hamid Akhavan will lead the future organization to be headquartered in Englewood, Colorado.

Motorcyclist Dead After Collision on 270 Thursday Evening

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a fatal collision involving a single motorcycle on Thursday, August 10. According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer, the collision occurred on NB I270 between Route 27 and Route 121, on the ramp to Exit 18, around 7:30pm.

According to police, via FOX 5’s Allison Papson (@AllisonPapson) on Twitter, “Shortly after 7:30 p.m. this evening, troopers from the Maryland State Police Rockville Barrack responded to northbound I-270 to MD 121 for the report of a motor vehicle crash involving a single motorcycle. Preliminary investigation reveals a Motorcycle was traveling on the ramp from N/B I-270 when for unknown reasons, traveled off the roadway and struck a guardrail. The operator and sole occupant on the Motorcycle, who has not been identified, was pronounced deceased on the scene by emergency medical services personnel. All lanes have since reopened. Track Work To Impact Service on Four Lines This Weekend, Per Metro

Metro will begin track work over the weekend, August 12-13, that will require single tracking between Eastern Market and Stadium-Armory stations, reducing service on the Blue and Orange lines to every 24 minutes. Silver Line trains will also turn back at Federal Center SW instead of going to Downtown Largo. On the Red Line trains will single track between Grosvenor and Medical Center with trains operating every 20 minutes only between Friendship Heights and Shady Grove.

During single tracking trains must share one track, taking turns going through the construction zone. Due to the length of the single track, trains will alternate between 2 and 22-minutes between trains from Eastern Market to Stadium-Armory with two trains, one Orange and one Blue, serving the platform in one direction and then two trains, one Orange and one Blue, serving the platform from the opposite direction. Trains will arrive more frequently, on average every 8-12 minutes, between Rosslyn and Federal Center SW, and every 10-12 minutes on average between East Falls Church and Rosslyn where lines overlap.On the Red Line, most stations will still have frequent service. Additional trains will operate between Glenmont and Friendship Heights every 10 minutes, with every other train continuing to Shady Grove. The construction will begin early Saturday and continue through the weekend, wrapping up before the system opens Monday morning. On the Blue and Orange lines work crews will be replacing grout pads, the concrete slabs necessary to support the tracks. The grout pads are located every few feet and anchor the tracks to absorb the weight of the train and provide stability.

Maryland tax free week will take place from Sunday, August 13th until Saturday, August 19th this year. Below we have everything you need to know about how Tax-Free Week works in Maryland:

Facts About Tax-Free Week: From 12:01 a.m. on the second Sunday in August through midnight on the following Saturday, qualifying clothing and footwear priced $100 or less will be exempt from Maryland’s six percent sales tax. The first $40 of back/bookbag sales also qualify. Snakes are an integral part of Maryland’s fauna, functioning as important predators. Snakes are limbless reptiles with elongate bodies that are covered with scales. All snakes lack external ear openings and eyelids and have long, forked tongues. Maryland is home to 27 species and sub-species of snakes, including two with medically significant venom, the copperhead and the timber rattlesnake. These two species are found in the viper family (Viperidae). The remaining species are in the family Colubridae, which is the largest snake family in the world.

Montgomery County Will Hold a Virtual Hearing to Consider an Application Seeking Permanent Closure of Westbard Ave at River Rd

Pursuant to Section 49-62 of the Montgomery County Code (2014) as amended, the County Executive or his Designee shall conduct a virtual Public Hearing via the internet-based platform known as Zoom on Tuesday, September 19, 2023 at 2:00 PM, to consider an application from 5500 Westbard Avenue Block Civic Association (the “Applicant”), for the permanent closure of a public right of way at the northwestern terminus of Westbard Avenue at River Road in the Westbard area of Bethesda. The Applicant is requesting permanent closure of the public right of way from all vehicular traffic, including emergency vehicles, at the intersection. The petition also requests that a temporary closure remain in place until a permanent closure can be installed.

The Special Victims Investigations Division is asking for the public’s assistance in locating Timia Scott, a missing 13-year-old from Gaithersburg. Scott was last seen on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, at approximately 11:35 a.m., in the area of Treworthy Rd. in Gaithersburg. She is 5’4″, 120 Ibs., with black hair, brown eyes, and was last seen wearing a pink and black hoodie with white letters, bike shorts and black and yellow Jordan sneakers

Suspect Arrested for Gaithersburg Bank Robbery

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – have charged 33-year-old John Reynolds of an unknown address, with the bank robbery of the TD Bank that occurred on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, in the 800 block of West Diamond Avenue in Gaithersburg.

At approximately 2:23 p.m., Montgomery County Police and Gaithersburg Police officers responded to the location for the report of a bank robbery. The investigation has revealed that Reynolds entered the bank, approached an employee who was working behind the counter and demanded money. Reynolds then jumped over the counter, removed an undisclosed amount of money from a drawer and placed it inside of a bag. Reynolds left the bank in a silver Hyundai.

Phylicia Rashad to Step Down as Dean of Howard’s College of Fine Arts

Phylicia Rashad will be stepping down as dean of Howard University’s Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts at the end of this upcoming school year (2023/24). A reason for her impending departure was not provided, but Howard University President Wayne A. I. Frederick announced her decision and praised her work at the school since arriving in 2021. Rashad is perhaps best known for her role as Clair Huxtable on the sitcom The Cosby Show (1984–1992) and is an accomplished actress having appeared on various television shows, Broadway productions, and movies through the years.
