Per the Montgomery County Agricultural Fair: The Montgomery County Agricultural Fairgrounds is private property and we do not recognize any state or federal issued Concealed or Open Carry Firearm Permit. The Fair is a Family Friendly event that provides agricultural education and entertainment to children of all ages. Carrying firearms, weapons, smoking, vaping, and inappropriate behavior are prohibited.

Should a walk-through metal detector or any security official identify the need for further examination, the Fair reserves the right to conduct additional screening of the individual and their bags as a condition of gaining entry or maintaining admitted status on the fairgrounds. PROHIBITED ITEMS:

Answers to Some Frequently Asked Questions About Recreational Marijuana Now Being Legal in Maryland

The Maryland General Assembly, during its 2023 session, approved legalization of recreational use of cannabis for adults 21-and-over. The law went into effect on July 1, but many residents still have questions about details in the law. Among the most common questions refer to being able to use cannabis in public areas and how its use can lead to impaired driving.

Smoking cannabis (and hemp) is prohibited in any public place. This includes outdoor spaces and indoor spaces open to the public including parks, streets and sidewalks, bars and restaurants, public transportation (e.g, buses, vans, trains, taxicabs, limousines) and indoor places of employment. Because cannabis remains illegal at the Federal level, a person may not possess cannabis on any Federal property, such as national park.

Free Computer Distribution Program Underway for Low-Income Families and Expanded Free Home or Mobile Internet

“Montgomery Connects,” Montgomery County’s digital equity and inclusion program, has launched a new program to distribute 34,000 free laptop computers to low-income families. There is a limit of one computer per address. Eligible recipients must be Maryland residents, but do not need to be U.S. citizens.

Montgomery County received a Maryland Connected Devices grant valued at $7 million dollars to distribute 34,000 Chromebook laptops to low-income households. Appointments to receive a computer can be made at www.montgomerycountymd.gov/computer.

Jamaica’s Kameron Simmonds Set to Begin World Cup Journey; Has MoCo Ties

Kameron Simmonds, a sophomore at the University of Tennessee, will be representing Jamaica in the team’s World Cup matchup against France at 6 am on Sunday, July 23. Simmonds, who is the third generation of players in her family to represent Jamaica on the national stage grew up in Midlothian, VA, but her father Greg Simmonds is a graduate of Sherwood High School.

Kameron is following in her father and grandfather’s footsteps, as both men previously played for Jamaica’s national soccer team. In an interview discussing her family’s love for soccer and each other with Knox News, Simmonds said, “The love that we have for the game and each other, it’s just so amazing that I get to continue that legacy within the family. It’s something we can bond over and talk about. It’s just an incredible honor.”

Bruce Leshan Announces Retirement After 28 Years at WUSA9

Bruce Leshan has announced that he will be retiring after 28 years with WUSA9. He joined WUSA9 as a general assignment reporter in July 1995 and has spent a large part of his career there covering some of the biggest stories in Washington. He was one of the first reporters on the scene on the first harrowing day of the “serial sniper” killings.

Per WUSA9: He covered the disputed 2000 election from Al Gore’s home state of Tennessee. And on September 11, 2001, he delivered breaking news from a building overlooking the White House while smoke from the Pentagon billowed over the National Mall.

Per the State of Maryland: Governor Wes Moore hosted the 16th annual Buy Local Cookout at the Maryland Department of Agriculture in Annapolis last evening, sampling dishes prepared by local chefs with local ingredients, live music and exhibits featuring Maryland Department of Agriculture programs. Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller, agricultural leaders, producers, chefs, and local and state officials joined the governor at the event to officially kick off Maryland Buy Local Week and the Buy Local Challenge, which runs today through July 31.

“Buying local is good for our state—it supports our small businesses and keeps our state’s economy competitive,” said Gov. Moore. “We encourage all Marylanders to buy local and enjoy the premium quality and broadly diverse offering that Maryland’s growers, producers, farmers, and watermen have to offer.”

Per the State of Maryland: Governor Wes Moore today welcomed the 156th class of the Maryland Department of State Police during a graduation ceremony held at Lifepoint Church in Reisterstown. The governor delivered the keynote address to the department’s 26 new members and their families and friends, in addition to law enforcement leadership and local officials in attendance.

“Whether this day was something you hoped would come since you were little or a day that didn’t seem possible just a few years ago: You’ve shown us what it means to serve,” said Gov. Moore. “It’s not just that your service is impressive and inspiring—it’s that your service is a choice.
