Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a train hitting a tow truck at approximately 11PM on Saturday night.

Experience Chocolate History
One of the highlights of this year’s festival is a large-scale chocolate sculpture of George Washington on horseback, created by award-winning chocolate artist Paul Joachim.
The sculpture will be part of a special exhibit exploring chocolate’s place in early American history. Guests can see the sculpture up close, sample colonial-style drinking chocolate, and shop the exclusive Collector’s Heritage Box inspired by the historic drink. It’s a unique opportunity to experience chocolate through art, history, and taste all in one place.

Visit the Sip & Share Seminar Classroom for educational sessions and demonstrations throughout the weekend, all included with your festival admission. Explore topics ranging from ancestral cacao in the Ecuadorian Amazon and the realities of starting a coffee business to craft chocolate and festival trivia. Learn directly from experts and makers as they share their knowledge, demonstrate their craft and offer a closer look at how their products are made.

The DMV Chocolate & Coffee Festival offers an experience the whole family can enjoy. Kids under 12 receive free admission with a ticketed adult and can get creative at our complimentary kids’ craft tables. Festival mascots Chunk & Bean will also be on-site for meet-and-greets and photo opportunities throughout the weekend. Families can even shop for Chunk & Bean plushies, children’s books and other kid-friendly items.

The Holy Cross Health Foundation was awarded $552,000 by the A. James & Alice B. Clark Foundation to help increase equitable access to quality prenatal and perinatal care. The investment will expand clinical services, ensuring a healthy start for all babies and families who receive care at Holy Cross Health every day. Holy Cross Health is a Catholic, not-for-profit, people-centered health system that serves the two most populous counties in Maryland, Montgomery and Prince George’s counties. Holy Cross Hospital, in Silver Spring, is one of the largest hospitals in Maryland, and Holy Cross Germantown Hospital is the first hospital in the nation on a community college campus, enhanced by an educational partnership. Many of Holy Cross Health’s women and infant initiatives provide care for the underserved, uninsured, immigrant, and under-insured local families who otherwise would not have access to quality health care. The programs help to lessen the economic strain on families by offering a comprehensive approach to care. Families have access to specially trained staff, physicians, and team members focusing on critical care, so that when the unexpected happens, families know they are in the best place for care for their baby.
Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a call for a collision involving one vehicle on Josiah Henson Pkwy between Montrose Rd. And Executive Blvd at approximately 5:30pm on Saturday evening.
According to MCFRS Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer, the crash caused the driver of the vehicle to be trapped inside after striking a utility pole. Crews were able to extricate the driver who was transported to the hospital with priority 2 trauma (serious, but not life-threatening injuries). Some lanes remained blocked as of 7:15pm.

In an email to staff on Friday, MCPS superintendent Dr. Monifa McKnight shared additional changes in personnel for the school system. Dr. McKnight previously emailed administrative and supervisory staff on Wednesday to inform them of changes that included announcing that deputy superintendent Dr. Patrick Murphy was no longer employed by the district and that two members of the MCPS Office of School Support and Well-Being (OSSWB), Dr. Donna Redmond Jones and Dr. Eugenia (Jeanie) Dawson are currently on leave. The additional changes shared can be seen below:
• Effective Monday, October 16, 2023, Dr. Betty J. Collins will serve as acting deputy superintendent. Dr. Collins, an MCPS graduate, enjoyed a distinguished 49-year career in the district as a teacher, principal, and director of Instructional Leadership, before her retirement in 2018.
Rockville voters will decide between two candidates for mayor and 12 candidates for six council seats in this fall’s vote-by-mail city election. The six council candidates with the most votes will win the six council seats. The Mayor and Council serve four-year terms. Every U.S. citizen living within Rockville city limits and over the age of 18 by Nov. 7, 2023 is eligible to vote in the city election. A driving lesson didn’t go as planned in Kensington on Saturday afternoon, as we are told a teen drove off the side of a parking garage during a driving lesson with an adult. The incident occurred on the 10600 block of Nash Place, off of Plyers Mill Rd, in Kensington shortly after 3pm. Luckily for both vehicle occupants, there were no injuries sustained.
According to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer, a single vehicle rolled over/off barrier of the parking garage (about a 10′ drop) which is located behind a house on Nash Pl.” The vehicle ended up getting wedged between the backyard of the home and a wall. Both occupants were assisted in getting out of the vehicle and evaluated by EMS. No injuries were sustained.
Dunkin’ will be moving in will be moving in to 8455 Fenton St, taking over an empty retail space on the ground level of the Central Silver Spring apartment complex. An opening timeframe is not yet available for the store, but construction has not yet started.
Yesterday we let you know that Dunkin’ will also be taking over the space that was previously home to $2.49 Cleaners, at 12196 Georgia Ave. in Wheaton-Glenmont, on the same block as Trippy’s Tacos and Seafood in the Buff and near Popeyes. Dunkin’ has been making a big push lately in Montgomery County, with new locations at the Layhill Center (14328 Layhill Rd) in Silver Spring and in the Goshen Crossing Shopping Center in Gaithersburg/Montgomery Village, where it has taken over the former Capital One Bank building at 20000 Goshen Rd. Last December, we let you know that Dunkin’ is continuing its massive expansion across the country and within MoCo, and there are currently an additional four locations in the works with more likely to come.

Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – 5th District Investigative Section are asking for the public’s assistance in locating Jose Dagoberto Membreno Orellana, a missing 18-year-old from Germantown. Membreno Orellana was last seen on Thursday, October 12, 2023, on Dovedale Way in Germantown. He is 5-feet, 3-inches tall, 120 Ibs., with black hair, brown eyes, and was last seen wearing a white t-shirt, black sweatshirt, black jeans, black sneakers and a black baseball hat.
Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Jose Dagoberto Membreno Orellana is asked to call the Montgomery County Police Non-Emergency (301) 279-8000 (24-hour line).
Per Montgomery County: The Public Safety (PS) Committee will meet on Monday, Oct. 16 at 9:30 a.m. to receive a briefing from Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) representatives about police statistical data, as required by Bill 45-20, Police – Community Policing – Data.
