Burtonsville

Burtonsville Crossing has been considered a mainly abandoned shopping center for years with just Pepino’s and Burger King currently leasing space. That’s going to change as EDENS and Montgomery County officials today announced the official redevelopment of the property that will include a major facelift and new grocery store anchor, Sprouts.

This will be the county’s first Sprouts location– a grocery store chain headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona. The grocer offers a wide selection of natural and organic foods, including fresh produce, bulk foods, vitamins and supplements, packaged groceries, meat and seafood, deli, baked goods, dairy products, frozen foods, natural body care and household items. Fortune included Sprouts on its list of the World’s Most Admired Companies in 2018 and 2019.

Downtown Silver Spring

Earlier this month we let you know that signage was up at Miss Toya’s at 923 Ellsworth Dr in Silver Spring, the former site of Eggspectation.  In early June, the restaurant posted on its Instagram page that they are now hiring and according to an Instagram story by Miskiri Hospitality, the restaurant would be opening in about 30 days (an early July opening).

Eggspectation, a Montreal based breakfast restaurant with locations across the world, closed back in September 2020 after 15 years in that location. Miss Toya’s is a Cajun/Creole restaurant by local chef Jeffeary Miskiri.

Education

Class of 1955 students created a plaque commemorating their time at George Washington Carver High School & Junior College. They held a dedication ceremony on June 16, which can be seen below.

The first high school for black children originally opened in 1927 as Rockville Colored High School with 40 students. Built partly with money from the Julius Rosenwald Fund, the two-classroom building stood next to the two-room Rockville Colored Elementary School. Both were wooden buildings that shared one bathroom. The county did not initially provide transportation so parents and the black community pooled resources to buy a used bus.

Dickerson

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) we’re called to the scene of a collision that led to an overturned 18-wheeler that trapped the driver under the vehicle, and live power lines in the area of White Acres Farm on Darnestown Rd. near Dickerson Rd. (on the backside of Woodside Equestrian Center) in the Dickerson/Poolesville area at approximately 2:15pm on Wednesday Afternoon, according to MCFRS Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer.

Upon arrival, MCFRS crews found the overturned grain hauler well off of the hard surface road with the driver requiring extrication. Utility terrain vehicles (UTVs) assisted in getting to the site of the overturned vehicle, and crews were able to remove the driver for evaluation. The driver was then transported to a local trauma center for Pri2 trauma (serious, but non-life-threatening injuries).
