At more than 439,000 square feet, Seneca Valley High School is the largest MCPS project to have achieved certification under the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED rating system, the most widely used green building rating system in the world. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. Points are assessed during project design and after construction to achieve a final rating of Certified, Silver or Gold. With Seneca Valley’s Silver certification, the total number of MCPS schools with LEED certification is 37.
“Seneca Valley High School students and families prioritized environmental consciousness throughout the design process for their new building, noting that we must all play our role in ensuring a safe and sustainable future for our children and our community,” said Dr. Marc Cohen, principal at Seneca Valley.

Lisa J. Bain, school secretary at Lakelands Park Middle School, died on May 25. She was 54 years old and had been with MCPS for more than 13 years.

Gaithersburg, MD – Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) are investigating a fatal collision involving a single vehicle that occurred on Thursday, June 9, at approximately 11:37 p.m., on Frederick Rd. at Wheatfield Dr.
Upon arrival officers discovered a 53 year-old female victim who was suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. The victim advised officers that while inside her residence, she was shot by a family member, later identified as Ricardo Ephrian Malcolm. Officers made contact with the suspect who exited the residence without incident and was taken into custody.
The victim was transported to a local trauma center with non-life threatening injuries and is listed in stable condition.

All proceeds benefit the Foundation’s mission to strengthen community-police relationships, support officers wellness, and enhance public safety initiatives across Montgomery County.

China King at 8035 Snouffer School Rd in Gaithersburg has closed. The restaurant opened in 2001 and closed its doors this past April. The owners tell us that difficulty staffing and pandemic woes helped them to decide it was time to retire.
China King was known for its modern interpretation of classic dishes and for using high quality fresh ingredients. The restaurant was located between 7-Eleven and El Salvadoran restaurant El Encanto.
On May 26th Judge David Boynton ruled defendant, Steven Alston, will be tried as an adult in the trial where the 17-year-old is facing attempted first-degree murder and other charges for the shooting inside Magruder High School on January 21st, 2022 that wounded a fellow student, according to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office. On Friday, Caitlyn Peetz reported that during a hearing in Montgomery County Circuit Court on Friday, Judge James Bonifant scheduled the trial to begin Feb. 27, with it expected to last through March 10.
Alston faces more than 100 years in prison if convicted. According to charging documents, “Alston advised he took the handgun to school because he was worried he was going to get jumped.” Alston was apprehended in a classroom in school after the incident took place and while the school was in lockdown. A privately manufactured firearm (ghost gun) was found nearby inside the school, which is believed to be the gun used by Alston. Police Chief Marcus Jones noted at a press conference that there were several students in the bathroom at the time of the shooting, and nobody called 9-1-1.
