Vanessa Moya is in critical, but stable, condition after a driver ran her over twice in a Pike & Rose parking lot early Thursday morning.
We spoke with Adriana Moya, Vanessa Moya’s sister, who told us that a fight broke out in a parking lot at Pike & Rose between 2am and 3am. Adriana tells us that Vanessa attempted to help keep peace when she was run over by a driver. The driver then ran her over once more while speeding away from the incident.

We spoke with management at Shoppers in Germantown this morning and were told that the grocery store recently signed a new lease and will remain in the area for the foreseeable future. An announcement was made back in 2018 that UNFI would acquire SUPERVALU, the parent company of Shoppers grocery stores. At the time, UNFI was clear in its plan to divest the retail business, which included the Shoppers Food banner.
UNFI then announced an agreement to sell 13 Shoppers locations to three separate grocery operators. They continued to own the Rockville and Germantown stores, but ended up keeping just the Germantown store. The Rockville location closed in January 2020 and Aldi will be moving in soon.

Below you will see a brief history of Wheaton, courtesy of the Wheaton & Kensington Chamber of Commerce. Wheaton, Maryland was named for Major General Frank Wheaton, one of the few generals of the Civil War who attained this rank in the Union Army without attending West Point. The area developed from Leesborough, a small business district which grew near the junction of three major roads– Brookeville Pike (now Georgia Ave), Veirs Mill Road, and Old Bladensburg Road (now University Blvd).
In 1864, General Wheaton commanded the defense of Washington from Ft. Stevens against Confederate General Jubal Early’s attack in early July. The fort, still standing, was not far down Georgia Avenue (then called the 7th Street Pike) from the then thinly settled countryside that only five years later was to take the General’s name. Early Wheaton area families were the Cissells, Hardys, Stubbs, Hickersons, Godfreys, Bowies, Eustices, Dwyers, Pendletons, Wellers, Magruders, Ecclestons, and Plyers. Some of these didn’t settle in Wheaton until after the Civil War.
