After more than three decades as a cornerstone of the District’s craft beer community, Capitol City Brewing Company (1100 New York Ave NW, Washington, DC) has announced its permanent closure. The brewpub, which was the first of its kind in DC after Prohibition, will serve its last customers on Thursday, August 28, 2025.

Montgomery Parks is calling on the public to help select a new mural for the park activity building at Glenmont Local Park. From August 4 through August 24, 2025, community members can vote for their favorite design from four mural concepts, selected from a pool of 26 submissions by a panel of arts professionals and community stakeholders.

DC Sports

During the 2024 NFL season, Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels suffered a rib injury that was initially considered “week-to-week.” The injury occurred on October 20, 2024, during the first offensive drive of a game against the Carolina Panthers. In a recent video, Daniels casually mentioned that his rib was broken (video below).

Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Superintendent Dr. Thomas Taylor issued the following on Monday, August 4, reassuring families that all current MCPS employees have completed required background checks, after an Inspector General report identified long-standing process gaps. He emphasized that students are safe and outlined immediate actions to improve continuous monitoring, CPS clearances, and overall screening procedures with a focus on transparency and accountability.

Education

The Montgomery County Office of the Inspector General released a report identifying serious deficiencies in MCPS’s background screening process, including a lack of ongoing monitoring for over 12,000 employees and missing Child Protective Services checks for nearly 5,000 individuals. In response, Council President Kate Stewart and Vice President Will Jawando called for immediate corrective action, expressed deep concern over systemic failures, and announced an oversight hearing scheduled for September 26.

Gaithersburg

A two-vehicle collision occurred today at the intersection of Muddy Branch Road and Conservation Lane in Gaithersburg, prompting a response from the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS). The incident was reported at 12:37 p.m., according to Assistant Chief David Pazos.

DC Sports

To further cement its dedication to the sanctioning of girls flag football across Washington, D.C., Virginia, and Maryland, the Washington Commanders have announced a meaningful commitment to 127 girls flag programs in the DMV over the next two years. The support will include funding, equipment, and additional programming, with the team contributing more than $1 million to grow the game. The announcement marks one of the largest contributions to girls’ youth sports in the region.
