After serving the Gaithersburg community for nearly six decades, Walnut Hill Barber Shop is closing its doors for good this Saturday, August 30th. The beloved shop, located at 16527 S Frederick Ave., has been a staple for generations of local families.
On Thursday night, officers from the Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) were involved in an incident that unfolded on Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring. At approximately 8:16 pm, officers from the 3rd District attempted to initiate a traffic stop after identifying a stolen license plate on a vehicle suspected to be stolen. The location of the attempted stop was 9520 Georgia Ave.
Bethesda Beer & Wine at 8015 Wisconsin Avenue in Bethesda has reopened after being temporarily closed for six days due to building maintenance. (more…)
Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) has introduced the Refrigerator Curriculum– a “one-page, easy-to-read overview of what students will be learning each marking period.”
On Saturday, August 30, National Chess Master David Bennett will visit the Westfield Montgomery Chess Lounge in Bethesda to play simultaneous matches against 20 attendees from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Guests can register onsite at noon, and open play will also be available. (more…)

Eugene Gligor, 45, of Washington, D.C., was sentenced to 30 years in prison, with 22 to serve and five years of supervised probation after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in the 2001 killing of Leslie Preer in Chevy Chase, a case solved in 2024 through forensic genetic genealogical DNA analysis. The Montgomery County Department of Police (MCPD) has partnered with the University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) to provide discounted tuition for employees and their families, offering expanded opportunities for undergraduate and graduate programs. As part of the agreement, UMGC will award up to 60 credits to officers who complete police training and may grant up to 30 additional credits for prior learning and work experience, helping expedite the path toward a degree.
