Portion of River Rd Now Single File in Both Directions For Approximately Six Weeks

MD-190 River Road between Brookdale Road and Western Avenue, now single file both directions for approximately six weeks past the Washington Gas valve replacement. NO LEFTS from Eastbound/Inbound River at Western during the work. Full letter from Washington Gas below:

“Dear Neighbor, At Washington Gas, safety is our highest priority as we continue reliably meeting the energy needs of our customers. Today, natural gas is the fuel of choice for more than nine out of ten new homebuyers in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area, and Washington Gas serves more than 1.2 million customers throughout the region. As the region continues to grow, rehabilitation of our existing infrastructure is critical to maintaining a safe and reliable natural gas system.

Washington Gas will soon be performing work in your area. This project will enhance safety and reliability along with upgrading the infrastructure to allow for improved routine integrity inspection using in-line robotic techniques. This important project is just one of many infrastructure improvements being made across the region. This construction notification update is a follow-up to the November 2, 2022 notification.

Project Overview: Washington Gas will replace and upgrade an existing valve located on southbound lanes of River Road (MD190), between Brookdale Rd and Western Ave NW in Bethesda, MD 20816 and Washington, DC 20016. The scope of this project is within public right-of-way requiring permits by Maryland State Highway Association and District Department of Transportation. This work will not affect the natural gas service to homes or businesses.

Schedule Update: In coordination with permitting agencies, construction is now planned to start on or near the week of June 5, 2023 and is estimated to be complete within 6-8 weeks. Expected work hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Monday through Saturday or as approved by permitting authorities. Construction schedules may be affected by weather and other unforeseen circumstances.

How Might This Affect My Commute? Expect travel delays in this area and consider alternatives during construction.

Traffic controls on Western Ave will be in place daily between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday – Saturday:

• the right lane of westbound Western Ave will be closed daily

Traffic controls on River Rd will remain in place for the duration of construction:

two-way traffic and access to bus stops will be maintained on River Rd a single southbound and northbound lane to remain open with lane shifts left turns from southbound River Rd to eastbound Western Ave will be restricted left turns from northbound River Rd to Brookdale Rd will be restricted

The following pedestrian and public transportation stops will be affected (closed or relocated) for the duration of construction:

the sidewalk along the southside of River Rd, north of Western Ave the sidewalk along the northside of Western Ave, west of River Rd the bus stop located on the northside of Western Ave, just west of River Rd

Follow traffic control signage, barricades, and possible flagger direction for traffic information such as lane shifts and detours. Traffic controls are in accordance with plans approved by Maryland State Highway Association and District Department of Transportation or as authorized by inspectors.”
