Wilson “Lee” Faris, Jr., (also known as “Poppy”), 77, passed away on Wednesday, March 27, 2024 after a two-year battle with ALS. Many may know Faris as “The Voice of the Cougars” where he spent more than two decades as the announcer of every home game of the Quince Orchard High School football team.

According to a press release regarding the upcoming lecture series hosted by the Gaithersburg Community Museum, “there is evidence that 2024 will turn out to be the “Year of the Cicada.” There are many cicada landmarks this year, and it is the first time since 1803 that broods 13 and 17 will co-emerge.”

The City of Gaithersburg was awarded $1,000,000 in direct federal funding for the Russell Avenue Multimodal and Streetscape Improvements project. Funds will update Russell Avenue to better connect Olde Towne Gaithersburg with new mixed-use development, accommodate a future Flash Bus Rapid Transit Route and expanded county transit center, and create a park boulevard to spur economic activity between Odendhal and Montgomery Village Avenues.
