Construction begins this month on the large playground at Greenbriar Local Park (12525 Glen Road in Potomac), which has been closed since a May 2024 fire caused significant damage. Work is expected to continue through mid-November, according to Montgomery Parks.

Montgomery Parks is inviting families to enjoy a day of nature, creativity, and fun at Children’s Day at Brookside Gardens on Sunday, September 21, 2025, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The free, family-friendly event is sponsored by Friends of Brookside Gardens and will offer handson gardening activities for children and a chance to explore the newly designed Children’s Garden.

Starting on or around September 29, Montgomery Parks will begin construction of the Little Falls Parkway project, a Vision Zero safety initiative to enhance bicyclist and pedestrian safety by reducing the total number of vehicular travel lanes and implementing traffic calming measures. Construction is expected to be completed in early December, depending upon weather conditions.

Montgomery Parks is calling on the public to help select a new mural for the park activity building at Glenmont Local Park. From August 4 through August 24, 2025, community members can vote for their favorite design from four mural concepts, selected from a pool of 26 submissions by a panel of arts professionals and community stakeholders.

The Springsong Museum, a nonprofit organization, is seeking to fund and build a museum honoring Rachel Carson, a pioneering writer, biologist, and Silver Spring resident. The museum will be located at Burnt Mills East Park, a serene setting adjacent to the Northwest Branch Trail in Silver Spring, and will repurpose the existing historic 1929 WSSC water filtration facility building.

Montgomery Parks is hosting a special event in celebration of Disability Pride Month, marking the 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The event, titled “Disability Pride Outside,” offers a morning filled with various outdoor activities that are both accessible and adapted for individuals with disabilities. This family-friendly event is set to take place on Saturday, July 26, 2025, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Black Hill Regional Park’s Discovery Center, located at 20926 Lake Ridge Drive, Clarksburg, MD. All activities are free of charge, although advance registration is required.

Maryland Department of Natural Resources scientists caution the public to be vigilant about freshwater algae mats that can sometimes be a health hazard for dogs and other animals. Previously, as recent as last summer, Montgomery Parks urged patrons to use caution when recreating on or near Lake Needwood and Lake Frank located within Rock Creek Regional Park due to potential risks associated with high levels of blue-green algae (cyanobacteria).

Montgomery County, Maryland boasts an impressive network of over 400 parks managed by Montgomery Parks, encompassing more than 34,000 acres. A recent study ranking Montgomery County the 6th “Best County For New Families” noted that 94.26% of the county’s population live within a half mile of a park.
