The Hechinger name was once synonymous with home improvement in the Washington region. Long before the arrival of Home Depot and Lowe’s, Hechinger was the destination for homeowners, builders, and do-it-yourselfers across the Mid-Atlantic, including several well-known Montgomery County locations that locals still remember today.

Four Maryland restaurants have earned a place on The Washington Post’s latest “40 Best Restaurants in and around D.C.” guide, the final installment curated by longtime critic Tom Sietsema, who announced he will be moving on after 25 years at the paper. While not retiring, Sietsema’s departure marks the end of an era in local food writing, and his last guide offers a fitting snapshot of the region’s evolving dining scene, one that extends well beyond the District’s borders.

Composer and pianist Sam Post and pianist Ralitza Patcheva performed selections from their newly released album The Well-“Tampered” Clavier on Saturday evening, October 18, at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Glen Echo. The concert celebrated the release of their reimagined version of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier, which keeps Bach’s original notes intact while transforming the music through fresh rhythmic interpretations. The recording, released Friday on the ACIS label, reimagines all 24 pairs of preludes and fugues from Bach’s first book.

Over the past several months, we’ve heard from multiple readers who’ve been assigned a new 227 area code, and they weren’t sure what it meant. The Maryland Public Service Commission (PSC) introduced the 227 area code in 2023 to ensure a continuing supply of phone numbers across the region currently served by the 240 and 301 area codes.

Hobby Lobby has begun hiring for its upcoming Gaithersburg store, which will mark the company’s first location in Montgomery County. The national arts and crafts retailer has posted job openings for a retail co-manager at 15750 Shady Grove Road, the former longtime home of Best Buy.

Sugarloaf Mountain, located in Frederick County and overlooking Montgomery County, stands not because it was built up, but because everything around it was worn away. Unlike most mountains that were formed by the collision of tectonic plates or volcanic activity, Sugarloaf Mountain owes its existence to a very different process… erosion.
