In 2017, Esisonia Sotoglo’s world changed dramatically. Her younger brother, once loving and easy-going, began displaying aggressive and erratic behavior at 19, just after finishing high school. The shift was sudden and jarring for Esisonia and her close-knit West African Togolese family. Their family, loving and supportive, had always been there for each other, with Esisonia recalling her mother’s consistent home-cooked meals and love for her four children. But mental health was not a topic of discussion in their culture, and her family struggled to understand her brother’s behavior.

Montgomery County is seeking nominations by June 1 for its African American Living Legends Awards, which honor residents aged 75 and older for a lifetime of service and advocacy, with recipients to be recognized during the County’s Juneteenth Celebration at the BlackRock Center for the Arts in Germantown.

Montgomery County’s Asian American Health Initiative and Office of Community Partnerships will host the fourth annual Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month celebration on Sunday, May 4, at Seneca Valley High School in Germantown. Montgomery Village, MD native and University of Maryland standout Kaden Prather was drafted with the 24th pick in the 7th round of the 2025 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills. The Terrapins wide receiver, a product of Germantown’s Northwest High School, brings a decorated college resume and hometown pride to the Buffalo.

On Wednesday at Seneca Valley High School, a reported sighting of what appeared to be a gun triggered an immediate response, according to a letter sent out to the school community. The incident began when a student observed another student with what was initially believed to be a firearm. In response, a Shelter-in-Place was initiated at 12:42 pm on Wednesday.
