Happening Today: MCPS Superintendent to Address Rise of Racism, Hate Incidents

Per MCPS: The rise of incidents of hate, bias, racism, antisemitism and LGBTQ+ prejudice has grown significantly in recent months. In an address at 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 27, Superintendent Dr. Monifa McKnight will speak on this and its impact on the county’s children and school system. She will characterize the problem, issue a collective call to action and announce actions the school district will take moving forward.

The address will be streamed live on the MCPS-TV YouTube page and MCPS website.

Damascus Alumnus Bryan Bresee Projected To Go Within The First Two Rounds of the NFL Draft

Bryan Bresee, a 6’5, 298 lb defensive tackle is projected by many as a first round pick in tonight’s NFL Draft. The Clemson Tigers lineman graduated from Damascus High School in 2019. He is the former No. 1 overall recruit in the Class of 2020, and played three years at Clemson, missing significant time in 2021 with an ACL tear.

Widely projected to be drafted within the first two rounds, mock drafts see Bresee going anywhere from the middle of the first round to the middle of the second round. NFL.com has a second round projection on him. Per NFL.com:

Thirteen MCPS Students Win National Merit Corporate-Sponsored Scholarships

Thirteen MCPS students from five high schools have been awarded National Merit corporate-sponsored scholarships financed by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. About 840 high school seniors have been chosen to receive corporate-sponsored National Merit scholarships financed by about 107 corporations, company foundations and other business organizations.

The students are among 25 high school seniors in Maryland to be selected in the latest group of National Merit Scholarship Program recipients. Most of these awards are renewable for up to four years of college undergraduate study and provide annual stipends that range from $1,000 to $10,000 per year. Some provide a single payment between $2,500 and $5,000.

Gaithersburg Fine Arts Association is Hosting its 37th Annual Exhibition

Arts on the Green presents the 37th annual juried art exhibition of the Gaithersburg Fine Arts Association (GFAA). The exhibit is on display at the Kentlands Mansion Gallery through July 16. Meet the artists at a free reception on Thursday, April 27 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. All are welcome.

The juror for this year’s exhibit is Michael Shibley, who has been recognized throughout the art community with a variety of awards and professional citations. His original watercolors, which focus on light, shape & colors in the natural and man-made landscape, can be found in both public & private collections in the Washington, D.C. area & across the country.

BWI Airport Unveils Upgraded, Expanded Restrooms

Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport has opened the first set of improved restrooms as part of a broad program to modernize and enhance restroom facilities throughout the terminal. BWI Marshall Airport has an ongoing $55 million program that will ultimately expand and improve six sets of restrooms on Concourses B, C and D.

“These improved restrooms are an important part of our overall effort to ensure a positive, world-class travel experience for our customers,” said Ricky Smith, Executive Director/CEO of BWI Marshall Airport. “We are continuously working to provide an airport that is clean, modern, and inviting for passengers.” The new set of restrooms now open on Concourse B is nearly 4,700 total square feet. The new facilities are bright, spacious and comfortable, with full height stalls, space for stowing roller bags, solid surface materials that are easy to clean and sanitize, and improved ventilation. The new restrooms feature innovative technology such occupancy lights for the stalls and sensors to inform custodial staff when supplies need to be refilled. The facilities include honeycomb core windows that provide natural light to the open areas of the restroom while also ensuring privacy.

$1 Million in Damage Due to Fire on Wednesday Night; No Injuries

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a fire at a commercial auto body shop at approximately 7:30pm on the 11300blk of Fern St., near University Blvd. West in Wheaton. According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer, fighters arrived to heavy fire conditions which included the contents of the building and several vehicles.

By 8:30pm, Piringer tweeted that the bill of the fire had been knocked down, but that numerous hotspots remained. The fire involved the auto body shop and several vehicles. Surrounding roads remained closed for several hours. The fire originated at wire rack shelving, but the cause is still under investigation. Damage is estimated to be approximately $1 million, and no injuries were reported.

‘The Grove’ Replaces Augie’s Mussel House as Restaurant Coming to Cabin John Village

Last June we let you know that Augie’s Mussel House and Beer Garden was coming to 7747 Tuckerman Ln in Cabin John Village, taking over the space that was previously home to Lahinch. Lahinch closed permanently last May. Since then, Common Plate Hospitality has decided to bring a new concept to the space– The Grove.

The Grove has a hearing with Montgomery County’s Alcoholic Beverage Services on Thursday, May 4th at 11am. Construction is ongoing at The Grove, which still has Lahinch branding on windows at the restaurant. Robert Dyer reports that “Common Plate and Guapo’s veteran Jorge Figueredo will be The Grove’s general manager. The Grove’s operating hours will be 11:00 AM to 12:00 AM Sunday – Thursday, and 11:00 AM to 2:00 AM on Fridays and Saturdays.”

MCFRS Respond to Large Fire Wednesday Evening in Wheaton

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue services are on the scene of a fire at a commercial auto body shop on the 11300blk of Fern St., near University Blvd. West in Wheaton. According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer, fighters arrived to heavy fire conditions which included the contents of the building and several vehicles.

According to Montgomery County Police, “University Blvd. West is closed at Elkin St. due to a fire related incident on Fern St. Drivers should expect delays and seek alternate routes.” We will post an update when additional information is available.

Boston Market in Gaithersburg Has Closed

Boston Market has closed its Gaithersburg location. The phone number is no longer working and the store is no longer listed as a location on the Boston Market website. The space, 494 N Frederick Ave Unit B in Gaithersburg Square, is also listed as “available” through Federal Realty. We reached out to the Aspen Hill location, which remains open, and were told that the Gaithersburg location has closed, but that they were unsure if it was permanent. Community member Andrew S. alerted us to a potential closure when he noticed the screens for the drive-thru were turned off.

Last January we reported that Boston Market would be opening a new Rockville Pike location, according to signage that was put up at the old Katsu Go location in Towne Plaza (the shopping center that’s home to Navy Federal Credit Union and PM Pediatrics) at 12238 Rockville Pike Rockville, MD 20852. In December, we spoke with a klnb representative who told us that Boston Market signed a lease, but had pulled out of the space. The restaurant previously had a location just a couple miles away– on Randolph Road in Loehmann’s Plaza. That location closed back in February of 2019 and has since been replaced by Toosso.

Montgomery County Ride On Bus Schedule Changes to Begin on Sunday, May 7

Per Montgomery County: The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) will adjust Ride On bus schedules starting Sunday, May 7, to improve rider experience and efficiency based on ridership. Three routes including 16, 20, and 26 will have running time adjustments to improve on-time performance. No other routes will undergo changes. The new schedules will be available at rideonbus.com and in print at various locations.

Throughout the year, ridership data and on-time performance are monitored regularly to identify routes that could achieve increased efficiency with schedule updates, to better serve our riders.

Postal Worker Robbed at Gunpoint in Olney

A United States Postal Service mail carrier was robbed on Wednesday, April 26 in Olney. According to Montgomery County Police, “At approximately 2 p.m., MCPD responded to the 3100 block of St. Florence Terrace for the report of an armed robbery of a mail carrier. No injuries have been reported. No suspects in custody.”  The US Postal Inspection Service will be handling the investigation.  According to DC Realtime News, the carrier had their mail keys taken by an individual armed with a gun.
