Restaurants

In October, we let you know that a new Korean barbecue restaurant signed on to take over the space previously occupied by Saffron Indian Cuisine at Woodmont Station in Rockville (1319 Rockville Pike). We now know that restaurant is Damso Korean BBQ.

Construction is ongoing and signage is up at the upcoming Korean bbq restaurant. A hearing with Montgomery County’s Alcohol Beverage Services (ABS) is scheduled for next month and a mid 2023 opening likely for the restaurant. Saffron Indian Cuisine occupied the space from 2014 until it closed in May 2022. Bethesda based Marriott International has announced that current Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Anthony “Tony” Capuano, has been appointed as President and CEO of the company effective February 24. Capuano became CEO in February 2021 after Arne Sorenson passed away due to pancreatic cancer. Capuano has been with Marriott since 1995.

Marriott announced back in December that it’s current President, Stephanie Linnartz, will be stepping down to become CEO of Under Armour. “It is with very mixed emotions that I share the news that Stephanie Linnartz, a 25-year veteran of Marriott, has decided to step down as President to become President and CEO of Under Armour,” said Anthony Capuano, Chief Executive Officer, Marriott International. “On the one hand, I am excited for this next chapter in Stephanie’s career. On the other, I am saddened by the departure of such an incredible executive. Beyond the collaborative relationship that Stephanie and I enjoy in our roles, we are good friends, having rooted for each other for more than two decades as we grew in our careers at Marriott and in our lives outside the company. I admire so much about Stephanie – she has this great combination of grit, grace, and humanity – qualities that make her an exceptional leader. To say she will be missed is an understatement – but she will always be part of our Marriott family.”

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) will debut a major, thought-provoking new exhibition, “Afrofuturism: A History of Black Futures,” March 24, 2023. A highlight of the exhibition is the Black Panther hero costume worn by the late Chadwick Boseman. The Black Panther is the first superhero of African descent to appear in mainstream American comics, and the film itself is the first major cinematic production based on the character.

Per the press release: Investigating Afrofuturist expression through art, music, activism and more, this exhibition explores and reveals Afrofuturism’s historic and poignant engagement with African American history and popular culture. From the enslaved looking to the cosmos for freedom to popular sci-fi stories inspiring Black astronauts, to the musical influence of Sun Ra, OutKast, P-Funk and more, this exhibition covers the broad and impactful spectrum of Afrofuturism.

Below, you’ll see the Montgomery County restaurants listed without having to sift through the ones that may be a little out of the way. On the Washingtonian’s list, the first 25 are ranked and the next 75 are listed alphabetically. Looking for other great local restaurants that may not have made this list? Our very own, Taste MoCo, had hundreds of dishes from MoCo restaurants if you’re interested in “seeing the dish.” See below:

6. Inferno Pizzeria (12207 Darnestown Rd., Gaithersburg, MD): Inferno was opened at 12207 Darnestown Rd. by Chef Tony Conte back in 2015. Last summer, USA Today published a ‘Top 50 Pizzerias in the US’ list, “as ranked by Italian pizza experts.” The list was created by 50 Top Pizza, a pizza evaluation site in Paestum, Italy, not far from Naples. New York City reigns supreme with 9 pizzerias on the list, but Montgomery County contributed with the 25th ranked pizzeria in the country– Inferno Pizzeria Napoletana, located in Darnestown/Gaithersburg.
