Magruder High School freshman Colin Abrams will come home from Oregon a National Champion after his first place finish in the Freshman 400m with a time of 49.46. The Nike Outdoor Nationals are currently taking place at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field (June 16-June 19).

According to MileSplitMD, Colin “has a personal best in the 800m of 1:54.71, which is a Maryland freshman class record, and US Frosh No. 1 this season. He sits MD No. 5 overall this season. Abrams is also MD Frosh No. 1 in the 400m this season with his 50.70 FAT personal best.


Bethesda

Philz Coffee, located at 7247 Woodmont Avenue in Bethesda, has closed permanently, according to the company website. The coffee shop is also listed as “permanently closed” on its Facebook page. Philz Coffee opened its Bethesda location in December of 2018. DC Area locations in Adams Morgan, Navy Yard, and Ballston remain open.

Traffic

The two right lanes remain closed on SB I-270 prior to I-370, due to a drainage pipe failure. The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (SHA) has let motorists to expect major delays during tomorrow’s commute and encourages everyone to leave extra commute time, use alternate routes, or utilize mass transit.

According to yesterday’s press release from Maryland State Police: “At this time, the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) is out with a large sinkhole in the right lane of I-270 southbound prior to Exit 9 I-370 in Montgomery County.” The sinkhole is the result of a broken 6ft drainage pipe.

Silver Spring

The body of 21-year-old Yannick Dbumeni-Ndaleu was recovered at approximately 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, the morning after he disappeared under the water while helping another man pull his son from a rip current, according to Myrtle Beach Chief Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard. Dbumeni-Ndaleu is a Silver Spring resident who graduated from Springbrook High School.


Beyond MoCo

Per Prince George’s County Police: Prince George’s County Police detectives charged a man for vandalizing two public libraries in the county. These incidents occurred at the Greenbelt Branch Library and the New Carrollton Branch Library. The suspect is 30-year-old Charles Sutherland of Takoma Park.

The preliminary investigation revealed Sutherland spray-painted the word “groomer” on the exteriors of both buildings. The vandalism at the Greenbelt location occurred on June 4, 2022, and on June 9, 2022, at the branch in New Carrollton. The PGPD assumed the investigation into these incidents on June 15, 2022.


Montgomery Planning

Annual School Test will guide school adequacy and Utilization Premium Payments for the fiscal year starting July 1

The Montgomery County Planning Board, part of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), certified the fiscal year 2023 Annual School Test results and accepted the accompanying School Utilization Report at its June 16 meeting in accordance with the Growth and Infrastructure Policy (GIP). The GIP imposes Utilization Premium Payments on developers building new housing units in Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) service areas projected to be overutilized.

Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring was in a lockdown earlier this afternoon after a report of a weapon seen outside on school property, according to a message sent to the Blair community by principal Renay Johnson at 2:06pm. The lockdown was lifted after a review of video footage and school administrators are now coordinating dismissal plan. The message sent home at 2:06pm can be seen below:
