Washington, D.C. mom takes home prize in Feb. 26 drawing
Per MD Lottery:
“Me and my son watch ‘(My) Lottery Dream Home’ all the time,” said a 44-year-old Washington, D.C. resident. “Now, we can get our very own Lottery dream home.” The key to making her dream come true was a $3 Powerball ticket, which won $2 million in the Feb. 26 drawing.
“Smudge,” which is a nickname she chose for publicity as a shoutout to her 11-year-old son, said she doesn’t often play Lottery games. However, watching the popular television show where a host takes Lottery winners on a search for their dream home piqued her interest in the game. Last Saturday, while her son was involved in his normal weekend activities in Maryland, “Smudge” decided to do a little shopping.
“I was having company later and I wanted to get a bottle of wine,” she said.
“Smudge” stopped at Rodman’s Discount Gourmet in Kensington for a few grocery items and the bottle of wine. While there, she spotted the store’s Lottery vending equipment and decided to purchase $20 worth of games. “Smudge” bought a $5 and a $10 scratch-off, a $2 Cash4Life ticket and a $2 Powerball quick-pick ticket. She added $1 to the Powerball ticket for the Power Play multiplier option before leaving to pick up her son and head home.
The office coordinator played the two scratch-offs first, which were not winners. She didn’t check the Cash4Life and Powerball tickets until the next day. Cash4Lifefailed to give her a win, either. However, as she checked her Powerball ticket, the astonished mom realized she was matching the winning numbers one by one.
“My brain just couldn’t process it, you know,” said “Smudge.” “I called my son so he could check the ticket again for me and his eyes got big as he said, ‘Mom, they’re the same!’ ”
The shocked woman then called her husband so he could examine the ticket and confirm the win. He, too, expressed disbelief. “Smudge” had matched four of the white balls and the Powerball number. Because she added the Power Play option to her ticket, the $1 million second-tier prize doubled to $2 million.
“It’s so crazy, I remember telling my son, ‘I want my Lottery dream home,’ ” she said, smiling. She will soon have one. In addition to buying a house, “Smudge” plans to save some of the fortune for her son’s college education.
“Smudge” isn’t the only winner. Rodman’s Discount Gourmet located at 5148 Nicholson Lane in Kensington will receive a $5,000 bonus from the Lottery for selling the $2 million winning ticket with Power Play.
A $1 million Powerball ticket was sold in Montgomery County for the drawing held on Monday, December 20th. Per Maryland Lottery, the ticket was sold at New Hampshire Sunoco, 6360 New Hampshire Avenue, Takoma Park and remains unclaimed as of Dec. 27.
The full round up of winners across the state can be seen below, courtesy of MD Lottery:
Players across Maryland won nearly $38.2 million during week ending Dec. 26
A Cash4Life ticket sold Christmas Eve in North East delivered $1,000 a week for life to a lucky Maryland Lottery player. Meanwhile, the surging Powerball jackpot continued to generate big prizes across the state last week, including a $1 million win on a ticket sold in Takoma Park.
The Cash4Life ticket sold in Cecil County for the Dec. 24 drawing gives the winner a choice between $1,000 a week for life, paid in annual installments of $52,000, or a one-time payment of $1 million.
The $1 million Powerball ticket sold in Montgomery County for the Dec. 20 drawing delivered one of six big Powerball prizes in Maryland last week as the jackpot climbed to an estimated annuity value of $416 million for the Dec. 27 drawing ($299.5 million estimated cash option). Five other Powerball tickets, each worth $50,000, were sold in Baltimore, Bowie, Ellerslie, Hyattsville and Trappe.
In all, 22 players across the state won or claimed prizes of $10,000 or more, and the Lottery paid nearly $38.2 million in prizes in the seven days ending Dec. 26.

Daycare worker Marnobia Alegria Juarez visited Lottery headquarters on June 11 to claim her $40,000 prize in the $2 Million VaxCash Promotion.
Excited winner plans to invest prize money
A little bit of rain didn’t stop Marnobia Alegria Juarez from claiming her $2 Million VaxCash Promotion prize. Alegria Juarez was the $40,000 winner in the June 1 drawing. The excited winner and her mother made the trip to Lottery headquarters in Baltimore on June 11.
When asked if she had told friends and family about her VaxCash prize, the 27-year-old said she hadn’t told many people yet, because she wanted to make sure it was real.
The Silver Spring resident, who works at a daycare center, was vaccinated in February while living in Prince George’s County.
“Even if I didn’t work in a daycare setting, I still would have gotten the vaccine,” she said. “I believe in vaccines.”
Alegria Juarez said she would like to invest some of her prize money.
The VaxCash Promotion, announced by Governor Larry Hogan on May 20, is a collaboration of the Maryland Lottery and the Maryland Department of Health, aimed at incentivizing Marylanders who have not yet received their COVID-19 vaccinations while rewarding those who have. All Maryland residents 18 and older who have received a COVID-19 shot at a non-Federal facility in Maryland at any time are automatically entered into daily drawings being held from May 25 through July 4.
Each day through July 3, one winner will receive a $40,000 prize, and the promotion culminates on the Fourth of July when one winner will receive a $400,000 prize.
Today’s winner, 6/15/21, is also from MoCo– a Bethesda resident.
